King, came down the stretch today
with a smashing drive to capture
the rich Kentucky Derby, duplicate
the victory of his daddy, Bubbling
Over, In 1820, and give the hearts
of tha old bluegrass their greatest
thrill In many a southern moon,
Burgoo King whipped the best that
the east had to oiler In an uiv
wieldly field of 30 starters, whipped
them all soundly, and gave his own
er. Colonel Edward Riley Bradley,
the master of Idle Hour farm of
Lexington, honors that no turfman
has ever gained before.

at the post, finally broke poorly,
was kicked In an early Jam and
never a contender despite the ef
forts of Jockey Pete Walls to pull the
favorite out of the ruck.
Burgoo Klng'a stable mate. Bro
ther Joe, finished last after Liberty
Limited, the hope of the Three D's
table of Fort Worth, Texas, broke
down In the back stretch, but no
body paid any attention to that odd
ity as the handsome victor came
back to the atanda to receive a ter
rific ovation while Governor Ruby

Jefferson, of Portland, the favor
ite, gained much of the glory of the
meet when Bobby Grayson and bis
teammate, Ray Woodman, broke
state records In the hundred yard
dash, low hurdles and 440-yard dash.
Thla gave Jefferson 16 of Its total
of 22 points.
Grant of Portland placed third
with 18 points. La Grande waa
fourth with 16.7 and Salem was fifth
with 11 points. A total of 29 teams
