A dozen police eurrounded the man
and a crowd gathered.

aa Paul Gougutoif, a Russian phy
sician. -
They bad no Idea of his motive,
but someone heard him shout as he
fired!
. "Die for the fatherland."
The police, hammering at Oougu
loff, learned that he had come here
from Monaco Wednesday night, espe
cially to commit this crime.
He was born a Cossack, he told
them, and two years ago formed what
he called the Society of Russian Fas
cists. (hot for Revenge

confessed, because he wanted revenge
for the French refusal to Intervene

Premier Andre Tardleu waa the
first man to reaoh the hospital after
the news had gone about. Former
Premier Calllaux came soon and there
waa a stream of distinguished per
sonages. Madame Doumer, who gave four
tons to France In the war, waa grief
stricken when ahe reached the bed
side. Aa the evening wore on and a
crowd pressed about the hospital bits
of news trickled out.
Rally After Operation
The doctors disclosed that after
the emergency operation the patient
had rallied slightly.
"Ca va," he murdered, the doctors
said.
That means "J am all right."
United State Ambassador Edge
and Norman H. Armour, secretary
to the embassy, were among the first
to visit the hospital.
At S:30 o'clock Mr. Edg tent an
other ambasay secretary to get the
latest report on the president's con
dition. The secretary waa told a sec
ond transfusion had Just been per
formed. Then Mr. Edg sent a radiogram
to Secretary of Stat Stlmson, who la
en the way back to Washington
aboard the stesmer Vulcanla.
Paul Doumer, distinguished white
bearded statesman who haa served
his country for many years In the
field of politics, became president
of th republlo last May.
His closest competitor waa the
lata Arlatlda Brland, but the "man
of peace" had alienated enough of
his contemporaries by hla policy of
reapproachment to prevent hla elec
tion. So M. Doumer, at 7. became the
13th prealdent of France. It waa
th second time he had been can
didate. In 1904 he ran against Ar
mand Fallleree, president of the sen
ate, and lost.
01 Humble Origin,
He It a men of humble beginnings.

a railroad. He died when the presi
dent was a boy and It waa a Strug
gls to attain an education, for he
had to loavs grammar school, at M
to help support his widowed mother.
He laid the foundations for his
political caresr In newspsper work.
When he gravitated to politic he
specialised In finance and become
minuter of finance In 1895.
Subsequently, for seven strenuous
years, he waa governor-general 01
Indo-Chlna and on his return from
that far away post waa re-elected
to the chamber of deputies. Three
yeara later h became president ol
the lower house. He held that of
fice when Fallters, then president ol
tlx senate, defeated him tor the
presidency of the republlo.
Sons Lost In War.

In the war. Three of his five sons
were killed in battle and a fourtn
died of hla wounds soon after the
armistice.
During the war M. Doumer was
a busy man In several minor govern
ment post, although In 1817, he w
mlnlster without portfolio In tin

thrown by Clemenceau.

not valid in Oregon, District Attor
ney John Baker Thuisday filed a
warrant a gal rut Dr. W. E. Nichol,
prominent Hood River physician, ac
cusing; him of polygamy. Dr. Nichol
was arrested and required to post
1.000 bond.
On March 0. the physician filed a
divorce petition In Juaree, Mexico,
and on April 29 the divorce from
hts wife, Mrs. Elizabeth C. Nichol,
waa granted. On the same day he
married Mrs. Anna Mae Klngsley of
Portland, at Vancouver, Wash.
District Attorney Baker held that
under the Oregon law Dr. Nichol may
be prosecuted for polygamy, contend
ing that Mexican divorces are not
valid here, ' although their validity
has never been adjudicated In the
courts of this state.
A divorce proceeding begun by the1
doctor in the Hood River county clr-i
cult court and to which hts wife filed
an answer, Is still pending. Dr.
Nichols" attorney, however, haj filed
a motion for dismissal of the com
plaint because of the Mexican di
vorce. This motion ha not yet been
heard. i
