. But Three Singles
By Herbert W. Barker,
(Associated Freu Sports writer.)
An altered lineup and a typical
pitching performance by Wild Bill
jfsllahan has given the world cham
pion St. LouU Cardinal their flret
victory In four games and snapped
the Chicago Cubs' winning streak at
seven In a row. -
Gabby Street, slightly annoyed by
an outfit that had succeeded In win
ning only five games out of Its first IB,
benched First Baseman Jim Bottom-
ley yesterday, shifted Jimmy Collins
to that post and Inserted Bay Blades
Into the outfield.
Wild Bill Gels Credit.
This lineup stopped the Cubs with
out trouble, 7 to 1, but the credit
perhaps rests chiefly on Hallahan's
shoulders. The "wild one" passed 10
men but allowed only three single.
Four double plays stopped the Cubs
every time Hallahan's generosity put
them in a threatening ' position.
George Watklns led a 13-htt attack
on Quy Bush, hitting a home-run.
double and single.
The Cubs' defeat automatically
sent the Idle Boston Braves into first
place.
In the only other National league
struggle of the day, the Cincinnati
Reds came from behind to down
Pittsburgh, 7-8, after the Pirates bad
gained a 5-0 lead.
Senators Take Lead.
The Washington Senator gained
the American league lead by beating
the New York Yankees, 4-2, as Lloyd
Brown outpltched Charley Ruffing.
Brown witnessed the finish of the
game from the clubhouse, Marberry
going in with one out In the ninth
after the Yankees had put two men
on Bases.
Wes Perrell won his fifth game in
a row as Cleveland pounded out an
11-1 victory over the Chicago White
Sox. It was fairly close until the
eighth when Cleveland scored seven
runs off Poser and McKaln.
The much.traveled right-hander.
Irving Radley, made his first start
for the St. Louis Browns, struck out
11 men and beat the Detroit Tigers,
4-S.
