(Spl) Last meeting of the Fern Val
ley Literary society this season was
held April 32. Plans for welner
roasts and other summer activities
will be made later. The program was
musical numbers and was considered
one of the best presented. Under
the direction of Louis Putman and
Ray Brownrlgg the program was:
"The Cowboy's Lament," sung by Ray
Brownrlgg accompanied by Tommy
Cook, banjo, and Roy Barnes, guitar.
Ed Putman, guitar and Tom Cook,
banjo, gave a selection; Arthur Har
desty sang "Sleepy Time Down
South" and "Me," accompanied by
Tom Cook. Louis Putman gave a
violin selection "Red Wing," accom
panied by Ed Putman with guitar.
Encore was "When Clouds Have Van
ished." Robert Stead man and Arthur
Hardesty sang a duet, "My Pretty
Quadroon." In their encore they
were Joined by Eddie Parson and all
sang "Missouri Walts." A quartet of
boys played "Golden Slippers," Ed
Parsons sang "Way out West In Kan
sas" and 'Little Mohea." The con
cluding number Arthur Hardesty,
Robert Steadman and Ed Parsons
sang "Dream of Love." Refreshments
were served to a large crowd.
Fern Valley seems In need of a
hospital this week for there are so
many 111. Mrs. Putman underwent
a second operation at a hospital In
Medford Friday. She Is getting along
nicely. Mr, Kan tor sprained his
ankle and was confined to bed sev
eral days last week. Helen Kan tor
has been absent from school for a
week as she has been quite 11 with
the flu. Mr. Bussey was ill Friday.

The bsby boy at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Archie Perns born April 19,
has been named Robert Archie.
Mrs. Edith Hayman and Miss
Bertha Hayman are staying with Mrs.
Archie Ferns for a while.
Mrs. Barnes and Roy returned from
Klamath Falls Wednesday. They spent
about two weeks there.

will be placed on the teachers' desks
in all of the cl&ssroms. To see that
blossoms are placed where they be
long, will be a part of the fresh

As a large number of boys will not
be In school Tuesday, due to observ

out the city, the girls will take over
all offices controlled by the boys at
school.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska, April 2.
Pilot Joe Crosson was being acclaim
ed In Alaska today as the first man
ever to set a plane down on the
slopes of Mt. McKlnley, highest pesk
In North America.
He returned to Nenana, near here,
yesterday, after having landed his
big cabin plane on Mvtlbrow glacier,
at an altitude estimated at between
9,300 snd 9,000 feet.
Crosson flew Allan Carp of Kew
York and E. P. Beck, members of an
expedition which will make a study of
cosmic dust on the mountain, there
late Monday.
He had no more than aet his plane
down on the level Icefield when a
bllaaard came up and almost swept
the ship down the mountainside, he
said. The men finally secured the
ship and spent the night there.
They made a safe takeoff yester
day after the storm had abated and
returned to Nenana where Carp and
Beck will be Joined Saturday by other
members of ths expedition. They
then will be flown back to the moun
tain to begin their experiments.

eral court that he had rifled a mail
box at Medford, taking a check and
letter, received a parole and was
placed on probation today after Fed
eral Judge Pee had sentenced him to
three years In prison and fined him
$200 on each of the two counts. Mc
Caw explained that after taking the
check he had delivered It to the per
son addressed.

crew of the "N. S. W. n," 31-foot rac
ing yacht, narrowly escaped death
when their craft waa sucked up by a
great waterspout off Sydney Heads.
The yachtsmen. In describing the
experience, say their boat waa caught
In th. outer edge of a great column
of water which approached them over
a calm sbs, ss low black clouds
threatened heavy rain.
The yacht was whirled around and
hurled upward six feet and then flung
down, broken and filled with water.
The crew wsa rescued while clinging
to the remnants. The spout disap
