when six of the boys appeared in
Justice court to enter their pleas to
the complaints sworn out by G. W.
DeJardln, father of the kidnaping
victim. The other two defendants,
James Reed and Kenneth Fllslnger,
will have their hearings In Justice
court.
MIAMI, Fla., April 33. (AP) Mrs.
Jessie M. Keith-Miller, Australian
filer and Captain W. N. Lancaster,
her partner In flying adventures oi
the past five years, remained in
communicado In prison today while
officers sought to determine whether
Haden Clarke, 31. her fiancee, com
mitted suicide or waa slain at her
home yesterday.
A romance between Mrs. Kotth
Mlller and Clarke had developed as
he helped her prepare her life story
for publication.
State Attorney H. Vernon Haw
thorne expressed conviction she is
Innocent, but he continued to hold
her In Jail as he questioned Lan

INVADE HALLS OF
Miss Lou la Buford of the local
school system, who hu carried on
extensive research work to determine
the needs of the under-privileged
child, waa main speaker at today's
meeting of the Allied Welfare associa
tion at the Hotel Medford.
Her subject, "Special Educational
Opportunities for the Handicapped
Child In Medford,- proved an excep
tionally Interesting one to the mem
bers of the association, who greeted
her address with enthusiastic ap
plause and much discussion.
Medford has the only school system
in the state, which provides a special
room for children who are mentally
or physically handicapped or classed
as attyplcals, Miss Basford told her
audience.. The attyplcal children fre
quently make two or three grades a
year In the subjects In which they
have previously been deficient, after
they are given the special attention
provided In this room.
All equipment, Miss Basford de
scribed the room, has been construct
ed to fit the pupils' needs. Some
come In wheelchairs, some on
crutches and all are given the in
struction needed to provide them an
equal educational chance with nor
xnay children.
Plans for celebration of Boys Week
here were outlined by Oscar E. Hoov
er, Boy Scout executive, at the lunch
eon session, and Dr. O. I. Drum mo nd,
recently appointed county physician,
was Introduced to the organization.
Ensign J. R. Pack of the Salvation
Army urged all members of the Com
munity Chest to pay their pledges as
soon as possible as a great need for
the money Is realized.
The next meeting of the organiza
tion will be held In May and the pro
gram will Include reports from service
clubs and other organizations of
Medford on the particular type of
welfare work carried on by each
group.
Bowman Seeking
G.O.P. Nomination
As School Chief
O. R. Bowman, candidate for the
Republican nomination for county
school superintendent. Is finishing
his second term as superintendent of
the Talent schools. In 1912 to 1915
he was principal of the Medford high
school, resigning to accept the presi
dency of the county high school of
Klamath Falls.
At the end of the present term at
Talent, Mr. Bowman will have round
ed out 20 years of public school
work, part of this time In Illinois,
Including every phase of public
school teaching from rural districts
to assistant county superintendent.

JOHNSON IN JAIL
Paul Johnson, 24, and married, was
yesterday afternoon fined 100 and
ooata and sentenced to thirty days
In the county Jail for the possession
of beer, when he appeared before
Judge Glenn O, Taylor In Justice
court.
State and federal officers arrested
Johnson Wednesday night at the cor
ner or Sixth and Riverside. He waa
walking, carrying eight pints of
beer, according to the officers, but
broke four bottles when stopped by
the officers. Johnson gave a ficti
tious adrress.
LEE SMITH HELD
LOG HAULERS WILL

SALEM, April 23. (AP) Represen
tatives of the logging Industry, log
hauler and county courts will be
heard by the state highway commis
sion today relative to curtailment and
strict regulation of log hauling and
other heavy load hauling over state
highways.
At the previous session of the com
mission a policy eliminating heavy
loans from highways, particularly log
hauls, was adopted, tt-ause of the
reported damage done to the roads by
these activities.

GRANTS PASS SUNDAY
Funeral services for Mrs. Ellen T.
Wands, who passed away In this city
early Thursday morning, an account
of which appeared in a former Issue
of this paper, will be held at the L.
B. P. .11 chapel at Grants Pass at 2
p. m. Sunday.
The body will He In state at the
Conger chapel In Medford until 11:30
Sunday. Interment will be In the
Masonic cemetery at Grants Pass.

Cushions In the back seat of the
car belonging to Dr. A. P. Walter
Krease were destroyed about 1 :30
o'clock this morning, according to the
local fire department. Mrs. George
Codding, who passed the Kresae resi
dence about that time, called the
Kresses, saying she had smelled
smoke near their bouse. The car
was In the garage.

Lee Smith of Medford Is being
held In the county pall by federal
and state authorities charged with
the possession of liquor, having been
arrested by Cyrus Herr, federal pro
hibition officer, and state police
about 8:30 last night on the Pa
cific highway three mllea north of
Medford.
According to the officers, Smith
had a half gallon of alcohol In his
possession. He gave his address as
111S West Ninth street. Records
show that Smith has been arrested
on similar charges previously.
SEVEN PEOPLE LEAVE
THIS CITY ON PLANE
Seven people left Medford today on
the United Air Lines plane, taking
off from the local airport. They
were H. Griffin, Mrs. O. Chapln, W
Holloway, Robt. Norrls, Miss Coe
Glade, Wlllard Rhodes and C. T.
Baker. Miss Glade, Chicago opera
star, and her plan 1st -accompanist,
Rhodes, left for Oakland. Messrs.
Baker and Norrls for Portland.

give the baccalaureate sermon for the

students seized automobiles by their
bumpers and hauled them back
ward. Trolleys of street cars were
pulled from the wires and Boston
Elevated officials rushed extra guards
to the square.
When police reserves arrived the
crowd numbered about 3000.
Three tear gas bombs opened a
wedge for police and several students
were arrested. The crowd followed
as the pair were taken Into custody
and as the mob made a rush to
enter the station house, they were i
beaten back. The students answered j
with a shower of stones. j
After the melee the crowd returned j
to Harvard Square, where there was
a recurrence of the disorders.
Entrances to the yard were closed
and locked and police guards placed
at the college gates to prevent other
students from joining the crowd,
the situation was brought under
control and the streets cleared.
