Coe Glade Concert Leads
In Social Interest Tonight
Miulo lovers from all section of
the valley will gather here tonight
for the concert of Coe Glade, famoua
contralto of the Chicago Civic Opera
association, who arrived from the
south at noon, accompanied by Wll
lard Rhodes, pianist, who will ap
pear In concert with her at the Senior
hlfch school auditorium.
The concert, the last on this sea
son's program of the Clvlo Music as
sociation, will begin at 8:15 o'clock,
at which time all gueeta are asked
tj be In their seats, as no one will
be seated during a number.

Wednesday afternoon to a large group
of women, honoring Mrs. Lora La
Mance, national W. C. T. U. worker.
Mrs. Hubler. accompanied by Mrs. E.
R. Cobb, was heard In a solo, "His
Love Is Better 'Inan Gold." Mrs. E.
Iverson offered prayer.
Mrs. Bryant introduced Mrs. La
Mance, who stated that the United
States la the 25th country In 4000
yeara to have tried some form of
restriction of the drink evil. Review
ing the crusade movement In 1873,
the organization of the W. C. T. U. !n
1874. and Frances WlUard'a great
work as its president, she told how
the union had been the first society
to work for legislation to protect
young girls; narcotic education in
schools; legislation against cigarettes,
and reasonable hours and wages for
women. The International Associa
tion Against American Prohibition
claims that the "wtrts" of 40 coun
tries are behind It and that many
millions of dollars are being spent
to defeat prohibition In this coun
try. In closing, Mrs. LaMance urged
the women to hold the young people
In the schools and to get the women
to the polls.
Miss El low Mae Wilson entertained
with a whistling solo, which all en
joyed. Lilacs and other spring flow
ers made an attractive center for the
tea table, at which Mrs. H. W. Con
ger and Mrs. E. R. Cobb poured. Mrs.
LaMance spoke in Central Point high
school Wednesday afternoon, and will
speak In Medford schools today and
Friday.

For Friday Anounced
The Women's Christian Temperance
Union of Jackson county will hold an
Institute In the First M. E. church
Friday. April 23. The morning ses
sion la at 10, with reports from Med
ford and Ashland unions. Mrs. La
Manoe will speak on her work.
A covered dish luncheon will be
served at 12. At the 2 o'clock ses
sion, Mrs. LaMance will speak on "The
Holy Land." This lecture haa been
greatly enjoyed wherever it has been
given and all are Invited to hear Mrs.
LaMance tell of her travels through
that country. Rev. W. R. Baird will
sing, accompanied by Mrs. Cobb.
On Friday evening at 8 o'clock,
Mrs. LaMance will address a mass
meeting in the Baptist church, her
topic being "The Sword of Damas
cus." Baptist girls' quartet will. sing.
Mrs. LaMance is a clear, entertaining
speaker whom all will enjoy hearing

spoke to several large and enthusi
astic audiences.

To Hold Social Evening

evening. April 22. A full attendance

social evening of the two lodges.

and coffee and each auxiliary lady

Class Recital at Gold
Hill Event for Friday
Pupils of the Rogue River and Gold
Hill schools will be presented in a
public school music class recital and
demonstration at the Gold Hill school
Friday evening at 8:00 o'clock. The
event, announced for the first time
last week end, has aroused much In
terest In music circles and a large
attendance is anticipated by the Gold
Hill supervisor, Mrs. Minnie Guy of
this city.
Public school piano classes have
been given In eastern schools for
many years. Western schools are
rapidly taking them up with the
aim to give all children a form of
musical foundation. The fundamen
tals or principles of sight and time
reading are covered quickly and eas
ily under the system. , The child's
ear .la. awakened and a sense of
rhythm developed, the instructors
state.
All dry facts the child must know
are studied in public school music
with a group of children, converting
pleasure out of work.
By grouping children this way it
Is possible to make the price so lib
eral that all parents. It is pointed
out, may enter their children in the
class, through which talent previous
ly unsuspected Is often discovered.
Daughters of Union
Veterans to Meet
On Friday evening the Daughters of
Union Veterans of the Civil War will
hold a meeting In the Medford Arm
ory. All out-of-town daughters are
Invited to Join the local members In
attending.

To Meet Saturday
The Jackson County Primary coun-
clll will meet Saturday at 1:30 p. m
at the Junior high school, room 24,
Lillian Wise will continue her dis
cussion on ' primary writing. All
teachers are Invited to attend.
Mr. and Mrs. Daniels
Return from South
Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Daniels return
ed yesterday by motor from a month's
stay In the south. While away they
divided their time between Needles,
Los Angeles and Saboda Hot Springs.

FACE PROSECUTION
SALEM, Ore.. April 21: (AP) As
sault complaints and expulsions from
school loom for the 10 high school
athletes who Tuesday afternoon ab-;
ducted and beat Victor De Jardln to 1
unconsciousness. It was indicated :
here today. Legal steps to be taken
by the parents of the victim will be
decided following a conference with
the district attorney's office today.
De Jardln was found badly beaten
several miles from Salem, where he
said .he woa taken by 10 students,
allegedly members of t he "Julius
Caesars" secret society. The attack
on him was said to have been made
because of his refusal to Join the
fraternity, which has been banned
with other secret societies by school
authorities. :
As a result of the Injuries the
victim will be unable to attend school
for some time, ,hls mother announced
last night. He was reported to be
suffering from Injuries from kicks
in his side and from head Injuries.
Reports the attackers had also chok
ed the lad were confirmed by Mrs.
De Jardln.
The father and mother are Inves
tigating the affair themselves while
school officials began a thorough
probe. The matter will be taken up
by the school board next week.
Principal Fred D. Wolf of the Sa
lem high school Issued an ultimatum
yesterday that the boys participating
in the attack would be expelled from
school.
CANDIDATES' BALL
LAKE CREEK PLAN
Plans haw been announced by Russ
Moore, master of the Lake Creek
Grange, for a candidates' ball at Lake
Creek, Saturday evening, to which all
the candidates for county offices are
invited to attend.
At the meeting of Hulet-for-Con-gress
club Monday evening at Lake
Creek, talks were given by John An
derson of Central Point, C. F. Da vies
of Eagle Point. A. ft. Edwards of Ap
plegate. A round-table discussion
was led by Mr. Anderson, end Mr.
Moore, Reed Charlie and Floyd Char
He also spoke.
Music for the evening was furnish

O'Brien.
CANDIDATE HOST
One of the largest meetings of the
season, given to honor candidates for
office In Jackson county, was held
last night at the Phoenix Grange.
There were 300 guests and Grange
members present to greet the 48 can
didates in attendance.
An Interesting program was fol
lowed by a cake and pie social and
dancing.
The Grange will also entertain Sat
urday night with a dance at the
Phoenix Grange balL

will be the subject of Frank Jenkins
address Monday noon at the regular
meeting of the Kl wants club, accord
ing to announcement made by the

evening, young people of the Baptist
church of Medford were In charge.
The meeting was well attended.
Group singing by Medford young
people was enjoyed. Two addresses
were given by Mr. Shaw and Miss
Jean Ross. It la hoped they will
conduct another meeting here.
Jess Eldridge will conduct the mid
week prayer meeting Wednesday night
at the Presbyterian church. Subject,
"Our Pattern." Ladles' Missionary
society will meet Thursday afternoon
at 3:30 in the Presbyterian church.
Rev. Wm. Lewadder will conduct
the Presbyterian church service Sun
day morning at 11 o'clock. He Is a
retired minister residing in the Tal
ent district.
