LEAVES FRIDAY TO
PLAY IN CONTEST

With a- record unequaled by any
other high school In Oregon. Medford
high school's band, under the di
rection of F. Wilson Walt, wui par
tlclpete for the eighth consecutive
time In the state band contest at Cor-
vtllU Friday.
The con teat is being sponsored by
Kappa Kappa Pl of Oregon State
college.
Participation In the event cornea as
the reward for month of prepara
tion, and every effort Is being made
to Insure a high rating. The band
ha been treated this year In high
school as a subject, rather than an
activity, and an hour of practice is
pent each day. F. Wilson Walt is
the director.
The band members will take the
trip this year In private cars, leaving
Med ford Friday morning and return
ing Sunday. The contest takes place
Saturday afternoon. The student
will stay for the week-end at fra
ternity houeea. About ten bands are
expected to enter and are divided Into
classes A, B and O, In accordance
with the slue of the school they rep
recent. Med ford high school band
will enter daae A.
Each band la required to play three
numbers at the contest, a warm-up
number; "Raymond, the overture
from The Queen's Secret," by
Thomas, and a number seleoted by
each entrant. The Medford band will
play either "The Western World," a
march by Price, or "The aiadla'or
March." by the late John Philip
Souse, as It warm-up piece, and
"Intermezzo" from the L'Arlealenne
suite, by Bizet, as lta selected num
ber. '
An active program la being carried
out by the band In tin form of pre
sentation before school, theater
and olvlc organisation of Medford,
and a special benefit assembly will
be held In the senior high school
auditorium tomorrow it 1 p. to,
finance the contest trip.
A varied program of vnudevtlle acts I
will be presented and the publlo Is
cordially Invited. Also for the bene-
fit of the band, the local Oregon
State College club will sponsor
oard party at the Senior high school
In the girls' gymnasium, tonight at
7:4ft o'clock. The band will appear
in a abort concert.
FOR DRIVERS MS
To conduct examinations for oper
ators and chauffeurs. Ward McRey
nolds, examiner, will be In Medford
Saturday and Monday, April 18 and
IS, asoordlng to announcement from
Hal X. Hoes, secretary of state.
Mr. McReynolds will conduct the
teat from 8 a. m. to 8 p. m., the
two dayst In the oounoU chamber of
the city hall, at the corner of Front
and Sixth streets.

aminations are requested by the de
partment to atudy the condensed text
cm the Oregon motor laws, which may
be obtained tram the city or state
police offices.
Telegrams assuring support tor
the lumber protective tariff bill
were received Monday by the chamber
of commerce from Senators Stelwer
nd McMsry. Fate of the bill Is
eagerly watched by local residents,
as It Is sxpected to benefit greatly
the Industries of Wsshlngton and
Oregon.

The play was preceded by sev
eral musical numbers consisting of

monies, numbers. Two short skit
were also enjoyed.

TILLAMOOK, Ore., April 13.
