Favor of Dry Repeal

figures published In the magazine
tomorrow.
Nine state with a total population
of over 18,000,000 register a dry sen
timent of 40 per cent on more. Of
these states Kansas alone give a def
inite majority for continuance of the
prohibition amendment, while North
Carolina Is almost dry.
The wettest section of the United
States as evidenced by the poll fig
ures extends from the Mississippi
river to the Atlantic Ocean above the
Mason-Dixon line, with the dampest
concentration In the group of states
of New Jersey. New York, Connecti
cut and Rhode Island.
The dryest sector Is the belt of 1
states extending from Texas and Okla
homa to the Atlantic Ocean, includ
ing Kentucky and Virginia excepting
Florida.
The Pacific Coast states are voting
allghtly over three to one wet, about
the same as those states In the uppeT
Mississippi valley.

A total of 4.000,499 ballots are tal
lied this week of which 1,046.113, or
20.00 per cent, vote for continuance
of prohibition and 3.983.380. or 1i3l
per cent, are for repeal.
The dry vote shows a seventh con
secutive gain during the poll, rising
from 16 85 per cent of the total vote
of the first week's returns.
Nevada continues to lead the untl-
prohibition column, Increasing Its wet
vote again this week to 87.7a per cent,
The District of Columbia Is still
voting over 8 to 1 wet.

Four local men, who resided In
Sunnyslde. Wash,, eight and 12 years
ago, said Wednesday they could not
definitely Identify the Claude Bagley
found dead here Tuesday morning,
as the Claude Bagley they had known,
In the north several years ago.
Ray Price, who was acquainted with
I a real estate man by that name in
Sunnyslde, said that the dead man
was about the same height, had the
same shaped face, but did not appear
as old as the man he had known.
Bagley was in the real estate bust
ness for about 16 or 20 years, later
taking up farming, Mr. Price said.
Claude Bagley of Sunnyslde had
two sons, Howard and Harold, and
city police telegraphed late Wednes
day to that town for Information
concerning the family.
Mr. Price. Bill Kee, J. A. Rlchey
and Frank Shafer vle-rved the re
mains. No word was received by the cor
oner's office up until this afternoon
from John L. Pearson of Shelton.
Wash., whom they telegraphed yes
terday, when a letter from him to
Bagley was found In Bagley's pocket.
A watch and small amount of money
were also found in his pocket. There
was no name In the watch, the cor
oner said.
State police officers took finger
prints and photographs of the man
In an attempt to check the de
scription with that of William Bag
ley, wanted In Vancouver, B. C for
killing an officer. j

WOOSTER. Ohio (AP) Potatoes
grow more rapidly If they are warm
ed a couple of weeks before plant
inf. particularly If the soil Is cold
and the potatoes are from the north,
the Ohio agricultural experiment
station points out.
If the seed potatoes are received
from the north, they probably are
cold, the station says, and as early
varieties usually are planted while
the soil also is cold, the result Is
that they sprout slowly.
If left la ft warm room ft couple
of weks they sprout much more
quickly.
Iowa Melon Farm
Produces Strange

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) On his
melon farm near this city, John D.
Johnston has produced a pair ot
fruit-vegetable hybrids that seem
thoroughly satisfactory as to size,
utility and flavor.
One Is of the size and shape of
a small pumpkin and Is said by
Johnston to be one-fourth squash,
one-fourth pumpkin and one-half
muskmelon.
The other has the appearance of
a small squash and the shape ot
an acorn. Its ancestors were squash,
sweet potato, muskmelon and peanut.

An earthquake which lasted sev
eral seconds shook the cities of Han
kow and Nanking late yesterday.
There were no reports Immediately
available of the number of casualties
and the extent of the damage.

"Twenty-five Tears Distinguished
Service" Is the title of an Interest
ing article about President W. J.
Kerr of Oregon State college, which
appeared in a recent Issue of the
Pacific Coast Review, a business re
view for business men.
The story, which was written be
fore the controversy concerning Ore
gisi State college and the University
of Oregon flared, tells of the devel
opment of the school since 1007-1908
when President Kerr was at the
head.
When he became leader of the In
stitution, the attendance was 833
students, and at the present time
the enrollment reaches 6570. The
article states that "he came to Ore
gon with an exalted and aggressive
Idea of the character and functions
of a land-grant college. He conceiv
ed It as an Instrument of service to
the entire commonwealth.'
Under his regime the work of re
search In the agricultural experiment
station has been carried out with
the establishment of eight branch
stations.
The progress In all departments of
the school, which has been balanced
by the president's efforts and ar
rangement of curricula, has been ev
ident during the 23-year period.
Edwin T. Reed, who wrote the
article, says: "If, as Emerson once
wrote, 'an Institution Is the length
