CONTRACT
A BLUFF DISCARD
By Tom O'Nell
When succeas with a contract Is
difficult It pave at tlmea to give the
oposltlon a chance to make mlatakes.
There are real aqueeze plays In
which the defending aide Is helpless
against the playing of auccesslve
trumps or high cards of another suit.
There are alen pseudo squeezes In
which the eneu y guesses wrong aa
to what to discard.
A recent accomplishment of Bill
Huske, one of Ely culbertaon'a right
hand men, la the making of a little
slam at no trump by discarding the
eight of spades and then taxing the
last trick with the six spot after an
opponent had discarded the queen.

North had to find two discards and

north could have ahed hla cluba and

LOS ANOELES, Gal., March 23.
(AP) There be two new faces
In the regular lineup of the Detroit
Tigers this eeaaon If Manager Bucky
Harris adheres to the plans he hss

next month.
One will be BUI Lawrence In 'cen

The Rogue at Savage Rapids dam
yeaterday waa too muddy for fish
ing aa a result of mining in Foots
creek. It is hoped the water will
be turned Into settling tanks this
week, anglers reported today, and
the peak of the salmon season
reached within the next two week.
Sevoral fishermen were trying their
luck at Savage Rapids yeaterday.
No fish were reported caught, but
about 35 seen Jumping.
Pleasant creek Is also flowing
muddy water Into the river, butj
ine stream aoea not cause so much
disturbance, due to the fact that
the miners release only a small
amount of water each time, dam
mlng it up during operutlona.
The river above Savage Rapids
dam waa very cloudy yesterday with
snow water.
The water Is still high and all
anglers are anticipating the clearing,
which will insure good fishing .

There waa again a lack of genera
change In either aentlment or price
In the butter trade. This applies to
the local trade aa well aa the coast
generally. Laat week'a make In Port
land aa well aa recelpte showed
decrease.
Secret cutting In egg prices here
has become almost general and all
sorts of quotations are now In ef
fect. Local co-ops report meeting with
such prices but continue former lists.
Almost general ateadtneea la re
flected in the market for cheese at
not only Pacific northwei c points but
in the country generally.
Market Is still somewhat congested
for live hens In the local trade but
valuea here and In tha north are far
below what similar offerings are quot
ed at In central California. Low priced
egra appear the cause.
There la a scarcity of spring ohlck
ens here with prices holding up well
end out of line with what la reflect
ed for hena. Tha only break possible
appeara from the north.
In tha country meat trade tne nasi
call la for old crop lambs which show
well maintained prices. Spring limbs
are In call but not so keenly sought.
Hogs are Inclined to ahow a ateady
