PAGE FOUR PROPERTY TAXES SHAREJ3IG SLASH Over Seven Million Reduc tion for State Is Shown by Tax Commission for 1932 Counties Differ SALEM, Ore., Marcn 2S (AP) A 14.4 per cent In property tax reduc tion In Oregon for all state, county and local purposes, amounting to 7,243,429, was announced by the state tax commission yesterday for J932. The reduction was declared by the commission to be the most substantial accomplishment of tax rc.venchment In the history of Ore gon, and "It Is believed no other state has made a better showing." The property tax levied In Oregon tor 1032 on the 1031 tax rolls amounts to S42.D70.178, the commis sion reported. The decrease of 14.4 per cent Is for the state as a whole, but a wide difference In the results accomplished In the various counties was noted. Zn 13 counties the re duction exceeds 20 per cent, in nine It ranges from 16 to 20; in 10 coun ties the reduction was from 10 to 19, while In four It was less than 10 per sent. No counties reported Increases. Btate Tax Cut Aids Of the total saving In which the property owners will participate this year, the commission announced, 4, 1 02. 820, or more tftan half, Is ac counted for by elimination of the state tax and 12,650,801 Is due to re trenchment In county end local dis tricts. The largest decrease for other pur poses wss noted In highways by the elimination of the market road tax. for ai,690,464; elementary and high school reduced 380,896; Irrigation and drainage, 4OO,890; ports, S360. 009; cities, $178,347; bond Interest and redemption, $94,009, and miscel laneous, $7864. Three departments of tax consump tion showed Increases for J933. They are county purposes, exclusive of schools and roads, $626,012; fire pa trol, $36,018, and reforestation, $8, fSfl. Columbia Fares Best Columbia county showed the larg est percentage saving, or 29.97 per cent, followed by Umatilla with 98.68, and Polk with 28.63, Josephine oounty showed the lowest decrease with 8.98 per cent. SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS AT CHRISTIAN CHURCH MAKES EASTER PLANS Loyal Workers' Sunday school class of the PI rat Christian church has announced Its aim to have 126 young people present at the services on Esster Sunday morning. The class la the largest and moat enthusiastic young people's Bib's class In any Christian church In Oregon, accord ing to Mrs. L. H. Flahburn of Port land, one of the church officers. Last Sunday the attendance was 73, and the preceding week 84. The enrollment la now more than one hundred. Following the services last Sunday morning, a booster dinner was held In the church psrlors, after which the group called on new and pros pective members. The class Is divided Into six groups, with a leader for each. An attend ance contest among the groups, which opened January 1, will close Sunday. TITLE TO H Testimony contesting the home stead entry of Joseph Shaughnessy of the Butte Falls district was heard Thursday afternoon before Mrs. M. T. Edwards. The homestead entry u contested by Shaughnessy's former wife, who alleges he failed to com ply with the government regulations. She alleges she Is entitled to the homestead. The transcribed testi mony will be forwarded to the U. S. land commissioner at Roseburg for decision. COLUNSVILLE, 111., March (AP) Joseph Colone, former Madi son county deputy sheriff and ex pollceman. and Charles Bowers, pro prietor of a bar, were slain yester day by an unidentified machine gun ner on the northern edge of St. Clair county. Dr. Walter L. Vannuys, Presbyterian field rep resentative for Oregon and Washing ton, will give the main address of the morning. The program " will begin at G:16 a.m., on Rader Hill. south of Phoenix. The president of the Intercity league of Medford especially urges all young folk to attend If possible. All young people's orgsnlzatlons of southern Oregon will be represented. The program will be opened by prayer, led by Bob Shaw and Max Bray. A special number will be given by ths Presbyterian church of Medford. Norman Praley will lead the singing. The songs will be "Christ Arose." "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Sweet Hour of Prayer." Oeorge Bennett will give the closing prayer, after which the group will repeat the "Lords Prayer," before returning to their churches. Ths program will be about one hour In length.
