Sale of undergrade eggs In Portland
as fresh stock u proving a very seri
ous factor In maintaining already low
record price. These so-called under
grade eggs, being sold as extras, to
consumers.are being purchased below
the established prices for top grade.
The selling of so-called undergrade
eggs as well as the peddling by pro
ducers direct to retailers, Is respon
sible for much of the local 'disaster,
according to E. J. Dixon, general
manager of the local coops.
There was no change In the general
butter market trade for the day on
the open market for either cubes or
prints. Practically all offerings are
being, absorbed at full prices.
Northern Interests continue to hurt
sales of chickens In the local trade
as a result of forcing considerable
light and medium weight hens
en the market here. Springs and
heavy hens are In good call.
Demand for dressed hen turkeys
continues to exceed current cuppiy
here, but prices appear about as high
as buyers care to follow. Toms are
scarce but quality In general Is noth
ing to brag about.
First Texas potatoes of the season
were due to arrive in Portland late
In the day. T,hey are of the Tri
umph variety and will be priced 8c

Harberth, this car covered the dis
tance of 6770 miles in the record
breaking time of 135 hours and 22
minutes, and set an amazing aver
age speed of almost 51 miles per
hour.

City Building Inspector Frank
Rogers has received a notice from
David H. Merrill, managing secretary-treasurer
of the Pacific Coast
Building officers' conference, stating
that he had been appointed on the
executive committee of the organiza
tion. The announcement of the appoint
ment was given out by C. D. Walles.
Jr., of Long Beach, Calif., according
to the letter. In this position, Mr.
Rogers will receive letters dealing
with the business of the association,
which Includes as Its members, the
outstanding architects and engineers
of the country.

Thos. J. Fuson of this city received
word today that his brother, Clif
ford H. Fuson, formerly of Ashland
Is critically ill In Los Angeles from
complications arising from an attack
of pneumonia, followed by acute ap
pendltls. Mr. Fuson, his sister In
Portland, and their mother, Mrs.
Mary Wood of Ashland, plan to leave
for the south tonight.

A 20-year-old girl, terrified almost
to the point of collapse, this morn
ing sobbed out a story of how her
21-year-old companion. Paul Herman:
Hanson, was shot and killed by two;
men on a lonely road near here last
night. j
The girl, Miss Alice Olson, a ste
nographer, told police the youth was
killed as he resisted efforts of the
two men to assault her.
As Hanson fell before the fire from
the men's guns, she said she fled
amid a hail of bullets and managed ,
to elude pursuit by hiding in a field, j
She crept to a highway and stopped
a passing motorist.
The, youth's body was found by
police, near the automobile in which
Miss Olson said they had driven to
the spot. They had been keeping
company for the past 18 months, she
said. I
The girl told police they were sit
ting in the parked automobile when
two men. one armed with a rifle and i
the other with a pistol, suddenly i
appeared beside the car. !
She and Hanson were ordered to!
put up their hands, the girl said, and
then the youth was pulled from the
machine and ordered to stand aside.
While one of the men covered her
companion with a gun, she contin
ued, the other pulled her from the
automobile and attempted to assault
her.
She declared Hanson sprang for
ward as she screamed and started to
fight. The man armed with the rifle
fired and the youth fe'l. Police found
the bullet had entered his snoulder
and plowed downward through his
left lung.
An intensive hunt was being con
ducted this morning for the two men.

McMINNVILLE, Ore., March 24.
(AP) Funeral services were held
today for D. I. Asbury, 70, former
newspaper publisher of Canyon City
and McMinnvllle, who died at his
home here Monday nlsht.
Asbury came to Oregon in 1881.
He learned the printing trade at Un
ion and in 1884 bought the Canyon
City News, which he published un
til 1890. He then purchased the Yam
hlll County Reporter. In late yeara
he had operated a Job printing plant
here.
