BUTTER ADVANCE.
PORTLAND, March 17 (AP) Ad
Tnc In the pric of lower grade or
icort butter on the produce exchange
during the lut teanlon did not indi
cate any material change In the gen
eral altuatlon. It simply appeared
that the aellera of lower acore butter
were going to take profit while able
to do ao. The big atores are taking
all the undergrade butter offered and
the public appeara well eatlafled. "
T.nis resulted In both prime first
and first advancing lo lb. for cube
during the session. It means that
there la today practically no premium
for so-called top quality butter In the
Portland market,
.Recent attempt to force artificial
advances on butterfat In Port 'Mid
have failed.
Setback of egg price was shown
for the day aa a result of continued
shading of value. Most of the cur
rent weakneaa in the trade appears
due to the peddling by producers dir
ect to retailers.
While In some quarters buyers
shades their bids for live chickens
during the day: general feeling in
the market was at least steady. Prices
are therefore a trifle mixed.
There Is a mixed tone for dressed
turkeys. Some buyers are taking 32c
for No. 1 hens but little of the stock
arriving can be classed In that grade,
therefore such a price Is very seldom
available.
Increased buying of potatoes la re
flected at Oregon country points for
carload movement. Most of the local
purchasers are around fiOo with sacks
furnished by the buyers. General
strength la Indicated at most leading
American points.
Cabbage advanced to a new high
today at V4.60 per hundred pounds to
retailers. This la for late California
offerings.
