Fluhrer and Sherman "Dutch" Welch
are expected back this evening from
Oakland, where yesterday and today
they attended the National Outboard
Motor races conducted there. The
local men were ruled Ineligible to
enter the races, whlob they had plan
ned to do. Fluhrer and Welch mo
tored to the bay city.

The coal mine owned by the Black
Bear Coal company, located In the
Pat Ryan mountain, east of t&e
Jackson county fair grounds, has
now opened for operation, according
to announcement by the president,
J. Madison Lively of Gold Hill. The
mine, tunnelled Into the mauntaln
about 1000 feet, yields about ten tons
of coal per day.
Four miners are now at work In
two rooms, and Mr, Lively stated that
a larger crew will be employed as
soon as more rooms are opened up,
Equipment for the mine will take
care of the extraction of 100 tons
per day.
The small amount of shale present
In a part of the coal, will decrease as
the miners advance further In the
mountain, according to the presi
dent. Neal Newlanr! of this city will
deliver the orders.

president; L. L. Lamb, secretary; W.
H. Lydlard, treasurer, and J. J. Baker,
manager.

COLUMBUS' STORY
In observance of Columbus day,
Attorney Porter J. Neff addressed
the Klwanla club at luncheon at the
Hotel Medford today. He gave an in
teresting resume of the thrilling and
treacherous events of his life and.
unlike many modern biographers,
didn't take Columbus off the pedes
tal he has occupied for centuries.
The musical program for the
luncheon was furnished 1 by Mrs
Margaret Huntoon Williamson, who
sang two solos, accompanied at the
piano by Mrs. Archie Holt.
An Interesting guest at the meet
ing was James Irvine of San Fran
cisco, prominent In financial circles
of the west.
Photographs of John 8. Reed, stu
dent who disappeared from Oregon
State college this fall, were dis
tributed at the meeting with a de
scription of .the boy and request
of the Stockton, Calif., club for
co-operation of the local Klwanlans
In an effort to locate htm. Reed
Is the son of a prominent member
of the Stockton club.

Obituary
MYRTLE A. CROSBY passed away
at a local hotel Sunday morning
after a very short illness. She and
Mr. Crosby had only been In Medford
a short time, he being on business In
southern Oregon.
Mrs. Crosby wes born at Menom
one, Wisconsin. August 30, 1678. She
leaves her husband, Carl V. Crosby,
Carlton, Oregon, two sons, Arnold
and Donald of Columbus, Montana
and Forsythe, Montana. Funeral ser
vices in charge of the Christian Sci
ence church, were conducted this
afternoon from the Perl Funeral
Home.

Interesting Session
The October meeting of the Jack
son county council of Parents and
Teachers was held Saturday with the
Laurelhurst school unit as hostess.
Reports of units throughout the
county showed an Increase in mem
bership and activities, especially In
the health and welfare work and the
organization of study groups. Many
teachers were present to voice their
approval of the organisation and Its
helpful cooperation In the Interests
of their educational program.
Mrs. V. O. N. Smith, president of
the county council, expressed her
appreciation of the large attendance
and urged all .units to send delegates
to the state convention to be held
In Eugene next week, when speakers
of national reputation will be present
to bring a topic of interest to each
delegate.
Mrs. O. Q. D'Albtnl, who attended
the special conference and board
meeting of the state organization and
also explained the "do's and don ts
of the societies' policies.
The speaker of the afternoon was
G. A. Briscoe, superintendent of Ash
land schools and state chairman of
education, who gave a most interest
lng address on education and Its In
fluence In the world. - He drew
striking mental picture of conditions
in countries which have neglected
universal education, and compared
them to the leading nations, stating
that the difference In progress ts
due to a difference In educational
opportunities
