SCOTTY ALLEN, famous Alaska dog racer and sportsman,
will be present at a meeting of the Shasta-Cascade Wonder
land Association in Redding, California, October 26th.
What is Scotty doing in California t He is interested in de
veloping winter sports in Northern California and Southern
Oregon.
'T'HE MAIL TRIBUNE has always maintained there is real
opportunity in this direction, and perhaps Scotty is the man
who can take advantage of it and sell the idea both to' local
residents and outsiders.
If statistics were available we believe they would show there
is in the foothills and mountains of this section of the coast, as
much blue sky and sunshine in the winter as in the summer. 'At
any rate we do know this : that when the valleys are filled with
fog, and for days the sun is never seen, the uplands, no further
away than the Applegate, are bathed in an atmosphere of spark
ling ozone and actinic rays.
.
VS7E ALSO know that the greatest deprivation our young
people suffer, is the absence of winter sports, coasting,
snow balling, skiing, skating,
on an eastern trip during the
so new and enthralling to them
Yet during the winter above, the fog and rain belt, sucb a
world exists AT OUR VERY
ern Oregon, and throughout the Shasta valley literally a para
dise for outdoor winter sports.
IF SCOTTY ALLEN can awaken the people of the Shasta-Cas-
cade region to their opportunities in this direction, he will
certainly confer a great and lasting benefit upon this seotion of
the coast. And we know one young lady at least who will place
Scotty Allen in that exalted niche in her Hall of Fame occu
pied until very recently, by Santa Claus I

TPHE supreme type of humor is unconscious humor. The in-
dividual who tries to be funny almost never is.. The indi
vidual who tries not to be funny, but becomes involved in a
humorous situation, invariably brings down the house.
Count over the famous comedians of the present and past,
and practically without exoeption they are very serious, often
glum, either actually unconscious they are funny, like the
Cherry Sisters; or able by their art, like Charley Chaplin and
Fanny Brice, to conceal their awareness. As a result many ex
cellent jokes have been completely spoiled, by the narrator giv
ing the first and loudest laugh.

Copyright King Feature Synd., Inc.
News from ' Washington is
puzzling. You are told that
we plan to forgive our Euro
pean debtors, if they will prom
ise to cut down their arma
ments. Why do we do thatf
First, we lent them ten bil
lion dollars to complete the job
of butchering each other. Now
we plan to make them a pres
ent of the ten billions, if they
will cut down their armaments
for future butchery. Can you
understand thatt
What right has anybody to
saddle ten more billion dollars
on American taxpayers, in or
der to make European nations
kind, gentle and loving toward
each other t
Does It make any difference to us
how much they arm, or fight, assunv
lng that next time we should bave
brains enough to keep out of what
does not concern usf
Does anyone doubt that money due
us, and not paid, would be used in
Europe for the very armaments that
we seek to discourage?
The best way to discourage Euro
pean armaments la to make Europe
pay what she owes, ' If she does that,
she will bave less for big guns and
poison gas.
Let us collect our billions from as
many of our dear friends as are not
'welchers," and use tbe money to
make this nation secure with air
fleets, submarines, a full assortment
of explosives end gases, such a
should need, In case of attack.
The business of tbe American gov
ernment is to protect America,, not
to be wet nurse, or dry nurse, to EU'
rope. Do you think any European
nation la worrying about our welfare?
Why can't we attend to our own
business? Do we elect officials to
protect Europe?
The truth Is, our International fin
anciers stupidly leaded themselves
and their customers with foreign
bonds, as unsafe as lottery tickets,
now droppng In value. High finance
wants our foreign debts cancelled in
order thst nationals of foreign gov
ernments, with taxes Ughtened, may
have cash to pay private debts In
America,
The plan le to make the people sac
rifice ten billions in debts that reck
less financiers, and fools that bought
worthless bonds in Europe, may get
back their money.
And in the end they would not get
it back. Europe's plan Is to first can
col the war debts, then to scale downj
w wye ouv cne private debts.
Those that see this column have
read many warnings against the pur
chase of doubtful foreign bonds. Why
should the pubUo be taxed to make
good sucb foolishness?

But who or what will cur this na

That poor cataleptlo needs only to

State Highway Mess
(State Press Comment on Causes
and Effects of Van Duzer's
Resignation)
VAN OUZER RESIGNS
(Eugene Register Guard!
The resignation ot H. B. Van Duz
er, for many yeara chairman of the
state highway commission, deprives
uregon oz its ablest and most de-
penoaoie Highway executive at the
time wben his firm Judgments are
most needed. The appointment of
J. C. Alnswortb. Portland banker, to
taxe tne place of Mr. Van Duzer Is
a good one, but It will take time tor
Mr. Alnswdrth to achieve the mastery
of highway problema which Mr. Van
Duzer bad acquired by years of dili
gence and experience.
Mr. Van Duzer has not been very
won lately, ijixewise ne hss been
anxloua to drop the arduous and
thankless highway duties and give
more time to his own business. But
the real reason for his resignation
is political interference. For this
Governor Meier Is largely to blame
ecause of nis willingness to listen
to tne mutterlngs of political achem-
ers ana malcontents.
Highway affairs have been slipping
ever since Norblad'a removal of
Judge Sawyer In an effort to pay a
pouucsi aeot. Meier followed up by
removing first Gates, and later
Lynch (Norblad's appointee) In order
to pay nis political debts. Spauld-
mg nse been a trouble maker. Bill
Hanley hasnt had time to get his
bearings. Van Duzer refuses to buck
the grief. The Atnsworth appoint
ment shoves an outstanding man
into the breach but there should
never have been a- breach.
The new men In the highway com
mission are entitled to all the help
tne puouo can give them, but It le
going to take time to get adjusted
and It la going to be difficult to
avoid mistakes. Meier and the med
dlers bave made Oregon's highway
affairs a mess. People might ss well
known that tact.

Perjured Scoundrels
Or. Wilson's views Of American
Legion Members.
(Baltimore, Md, Sun)
The Rev. Clarence True Wilson.
D. D., ' LL, D., executive secretary
of the Methodist Episcopal Board of
Temperance, Prohibition and Public
Morals, said lsst week:
Legion conventions are planned
ahead ot time as drunken orgies In
defiance of the laws the men. as
soldiers, had taken an oath of al
legiance to support. ... T,he x-
soldler who will do that and prao-
ticaiiy all of them did It In Detroit

wen, every man Is entitled to bis
opinion, it wiu seem strange to
some, though, that the soldiers
swore allegiance to the eighteenth
amendment and the Volstead act
when the eighteenth amendment was
not ratified until January 18. 1918.
and the Volstead act was not passed
until October, 1818.
But let It pass. Dr. Wilson would
probably say that tt Is a technical,
lty, and we have already too many
technicalities In ths discussion of
prohibition. Regardless of technical
ities, we have the expression of his
opinion that every drinking soldier
is perjured scoundrel who ouaht
not to represent the decency of the
flag." This Is Interesting, elnce Dr.
Wilson, by reason of hla official
position. Is tbe mouthpiece of a
great church. One naturally horjes
that this declaration of hla re II ecu
the opinion of Methodists In general
to no great extend. One would think
that any Methodist who does not
agree with Dr. Wilson would lose
no time In making his disagreement
public, for the Implications ot that
statement commit the doctor and
those who sgree with him to a posi
tion that le, to put It mildly, pecul
iar.
