Alice Hanley Elected Vice
President at 55th Reunion
Eight Crossed Plains
Before Railroads Built
Emll Brltt of Jacksonville, one of
Jackson county's best known pio
neers, was elected president of the
Southern Oregon association at the
S5th reunion held by 200 pioneers In
a little log cabin In the Ashland, can
yon yesterday. The historic little
town from which he comes was
named meeting place of the 1932
reunion. Miss Alice Hanley of Med
ford. to whom southern Oregon also
owes preservation of many thrilling
stories of the early days In the Rogue
River valley, was chosen vice-president.
The uiay was filled with reminis
cences, punctuated with exclamations
' of "Don't you remember," as pioneers
from all sections of tfte state were
received by the southern Oregon so
ciety. "It's been 50 years since I saw
you, was the greeting of one, re
membered as a leading belle of the
balloon sleeve days. "I'm going to
tell you something you never knew.
I wss sixteen when I bad an awful
ease on you, I wrote you five or six
letters and tore them up. You quit
school . soon after .that and I never
saw you again until today."
Eight Crossed Plains
Eight "true" pioneers, who crossed
the plains before the railroad pene
trated the great western country,
were present, and three of them are
"Sarahs" Mrs. Sarah Howlett, 83, of
Sagle Point; Mrs. Sarah Cantrall, 83,
of Applegate, and Mrs. Sarah O'Brien
8?, also of Applegate. The other five
making up the honored delegation
were Judge William Colvlg, 87, of
this city; Mrs. Maggie Buckley, 77,
and Mrs. Harvey of Ashland, N. O.
Hasklns and John Hockeramlth. Mrs.
IL B. Vlning, 88, of Ashland, who
crossed the plains In 'S3, was unable
to be present, as was Mrs. Mary E.
Dunn, 8S, of Portland, to whom a
telegram was sent. A message and
flowers were sent to Mrs. Vlning.
John B. Griffin, 78, of this city was
greeted as the oldest native son In
the valley. O. 8. Butterfleld. 77, Is
his closest competitor for the title.
Guests From Afar
Guests from a distance at the re
union were B. J. Kaiser of Oakland,
who started the Valley Record; Mr.
and Mrs. J. B. Russell of Yreka,
Ralph Vlning of Oakland and Mrs.
Grace Fountain of Los Angeles.
Memorials, honoring members of
the pioneer association, who died
during the last year were read by the
secretary, Mrs. Nelson. Names famil
iar to local people were: Mrs. Mary
John, Evan R. Reames, Julia E. Beek
man, Ralph F. Dean. Mrs. Matilda
Robinson, Robert Anderson, George
Mathes and Geatta Jane Morgan.
Irving Vlning read a tribute to
Mrs. Ann Hazeltlne Hill Russell and
memorials were also read In honor
of Mrs. John W. Mills, Sr. Mrs. Mary
Walker Grubb, Sylvester Patterson,
Fred B. Furry, William B. Million and
H. Clay Meier.
Bouquet To Oriffln
A bouquet was presented by the
Ashland Clvlo club to the oldest
member of the society present, John
B. Griffin. An argument -arose re
garding the first meeting place of
the society, when Judge Colvlg de
clared the first gathering was held
In Ashland with Capt. Lash Apple
gate as spesker, and Mr, Griffin
maintained that the society wss first
organized at Jacksonville.
Appreciation of the kindness of
the Ashland Clvlo club was voiced
In a vote of the society. The Ash
land chamber of commeroe, the
superintendent of the park and Mr.
Hosier of the Llthla city were also
thanked for the beautiful flowers
used u decorations for the all day
meeting.
With the singing of the "Pioneer
Song," written for the reunion of
Sept. 15. 1883 by Mrs. J. M. McCully,
the 1931 gathering was closed.
Aged Circuit Rider

Dr. A. J. Holt, olrcult rider, saya he
Is too old to travel by train.
But by strplsne he likes the idea.
Dr. Holt lives at Arcadia, but makes
regular trips to Lake Wales by plane,
thanks to Spurgeon Tillman, one of
his parishioners, who is an aviator.
The trip by train requires nearly a
day. By air It is only 83 minutes.
