Oregon Trail, Will Re
ceive Coat of Whitewash
. TORT LA RAMIE, Wyo. (AP) Old
Port Laramie,- battle scarred and
weather beaten, will gleam again In
whitewashed splendor. .
Where once along the Old Oregon
Trail the ploneera sought shelter from
Indian arrows the motorist will come
to marvel at mementos of the. white
maa-redman struggle for an empire.
. Almost 100 years have passed since
the first log wss laid at Fort Laramie,
first military outpost In Wyoming.
But before the anniversary of that
century In 1934 the etate government
probably will have acquired the site
and whst remains of the old build
ings of the Indian outpost for a per-
manent memorial to western pioneers
and a Port Laramie museum.
Glamour and Romance.
' First steps toward acquiring and
i restoring ttie property were taken
' when the Wyoming historical land"
marks commission moved to buy the
land.
The history of old Fort Laramie
actually dates back to 1820 and be
fore, when Jacques La Ramie, French
Canadian trapper, made his head
. quarters at the Junction of what later
were to be named the Platte and
Laramie rivers.
Then In 1834 came Robert Camn
bell and Capt William Sublette, who
picked the site as an Ideal one for a
trading post.
After constructing several bulld
' lnga and naming the place Fort Wil
liam, they sold out the next year to
a syndicate of trappers headed by
the famous Jim Brldger and Milton
Sublette.
Rebuilt In 1S38.
Next It passed Into the hands of
: th American Fur oompany, which
rebuilt It lr. 183S.
The trading poet soon became the
' control point for the Rocky Mountain
region.
. . The post was purchased by the
government In 1840 and remained a
military post until 1890, when it was
old to private Individuals,

first visit in 1881 and recently was

Mr. Mathoen was a youthful mam.

few miles from the lake area and

bunt through the woods. Bis steps
led him up the slopes of Oarfleld
Peak, never suspecting what lay be
yond. As be reaohed the summit,
.the sotne of ancient beauty was
before him and he hurriedly rushed
back to camp to announce that he
bad discovered a sunken lake, only to
learn later ha had arrived several
years toe lata. -

9. The funds are to be used for

Paula and Mr. Bankhead leave the

hope Mrs. Paul will have better health

derson left Tuesday for Klamath
Palls, to look for work In the potato
fields.
The Friendly Neighbors studied the
manhood of Samuel Sunday evening,
with Milton Sanderson as leader.
After the lesson the primary children
told Bible stories and sang.
Charlie Mulhollen Is working at
Modoo this week, painting.
Mrs, Boyles of Los Angeles, who
visited relatives here the past two
weeks, returned by her brother, How
ard Williams, who will visit In Cali
fornia a week or so.
Mr. and Mrs. Blschoff and: baby
Cleo were Medfprd visitor Monday.
The school was awarded two prises
at the educational exhibit and the
children have decided to buy library
books with the proceeds.
Chas. Sanderson has been confined
to his bed for the past week with
rheumatism. .
Picking fruit at the Red Skin or
chard In Table Rock was finished this
week and the young folks are looking
elsewhere for work.
Mr. and Mrs. Luke Ryan are doing
some Improving on their ranch here,
getting ready to move on to It soon.
The ETkraldla family, who have been
living on the Rogue ranch, will move
to Sams Valley.
Two new scholar) were enrolled in
school this week, making an enroll
ment of 81 scholars. The new ones
were Ruby and Nedra Sohula.
SAMS VALLEY
SAMS VALLEY, Ore. Oct. 9.
(Special) Last meeting ot the
Ladles' club was held at the home
of Mrs. J. W. Blgham September
24 and was well attended. The
ladlea spent part of the afternoon
quilting. The principal business
transacted was the reduction In dues
to be In effect until after the de
pression. Refreshment were served
by the hostess.
Miss Elsie Straus, teacher In the
Coqutlle schools, came home for the
week-end, bringing with her several
girl friends who are also teachers
at Coqullle. The girl visited cra
ter Lake before returning Sunday
evening. .
Mr. Oulbertson of Lake Creek was
here Monday, exchanging dried beans
with the farmers for grains.-

from the mountain ranges this week
are. E! B. Day, Earl Blgham, R. M.
Conley and Albert Straus.
Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Coffee and
children left Sunday for their home
in Portland, after completion of the
Apple harvest In the Coffee orchard.

from Newel, South Dakota, Satur
day evening notifying him of the
death of his brother, Henry.
Chaplain of the local grange. Mrs.

Dick Straus, Jim Crawford and O. T.
Wilson, visited at the Harper home
at Beagle Monday, where M. -.R.
Harper has been confined to his
bed for the past six months. Mrs.
Harper Is now suffering from an at
tack of neuritis.
