Mrs. Martin Honored
At Luncheon Wednesday
Complimenting Mrs. Alfred T. Mar
tin, -who leave this evening for her
home In Chicago after being guest
for week of her sister, Mrs. P. W.
Ham 111, Mrs. P. Corning Kenly en
tertained at luncheon yesterday.
Guests were Mrs. Martin, Mrs. Ha
mill, Mrs. Leonard Carpenter and the
Misses Helen and Mae Carlton.
Supt Briscoe to Address
County Council of P. T. A.
The Jackson County Council will
hold tfte first meeting of the year
on Saturday, October 10, at McLeod.
O. A. Briscoe, superintendent of the
Ashland schools, will address the
meeting.
, Mrs. Harry Harding asks all 'unit
leaders to notify her how many will
attend from their associations.
The Medford council of Parent
Teacher units held the first meeting
of the year on October 5 with a very
fin attendance. To aid in welfare
and health work will be the chief
alms this year and each unit has re
ported work on these two objectives.
A change In both day of week and
month of meeting time was Intro
duced at the meeting as an amend
ment to the constitution. A contest
la on between the schools for the
five dollar prize offered the unit
having the hlghfet attendance at
council meetings throughout the
year. Attendance must be fifty per
cent or better to make the school
eligible. The council voted to alter
nate meetings between homes and
schools. The next meeting will be
held November 3 at the home of
Mrs. Fred Purden. A covered dish
luncheon will be enjoyed.

Girls' League Party
At Junior High.
The first Girls' league party of
the year, on October 3, was enjoyed
by a large number of girls at the
Junior high school.
It was In the nature of a fancy
drees affair many nationalities being
represented and every class from
queen to vagabond. The decoration
committee made the gymnasium at
tractive with ' autumn leaves and
flowers and a suggestion of Hal
lowe'en. This group was headed by
Betty Vllm as chairman. The pro
gram committee, of which Suzette
Stennett la chairman, presented a
clever pantomime, several readings,
musical numbers and dances.
Betty Thorndlkes refreshment
committee served delicious punch
and wafers and dancing completed
the evening's entertainment. Corlnne
Crawford as chairman- of the clean
up committee, did a fine bit of
work and much credit la due her.
The girls expect to entertain the
Boys' league of junior high school
before the year Is over.
Miss Parks Weds Mr. Lee
At Roseburg Wedding
Miss Vera Parks of thl city and
O. E. Lee, formerly of this city, were
united In marriage Saturday evening,
October 3, in Roaeburg. Miss Parks
Is employed as stenographer at the
Brlg?a law office in this city and Mr.
Lee is agency organizer for the West
Coast Life Insurance company and
recently moved here from California.
Mr. and Mrs. Lee were attended
by Mr. and Mrs. Ted Russell, formerly
of his city.
The young couple returned Sunday
evening and will make their home
here.
The bride la well known here,
where she attended school and made
her home for the three years she
was employed In the Llthta city.
Local Folk Vacation
At Diamond Lake
Mr. and Mrs. O, W. McDonald and
Mr. and Mrs. P. L. Flckert are spend
ing several days at Diamond lake,
enjoying the beautiful autumnal
weather at the resort and good fishing.

Fine Trip Through West " .

Carlton, who left some time ago for
Montana to Join Dr. Estella Ford War
ner on a trip through the western
states In the Interests of the United
States health service, bring news that
she Is having a very Interesting time.
The health work carried on In other
states MIaa Carlton is comparing with
that carried on In Jackson county,
and finds that this region Is doing
very well, she writes. She Is visiting
in Spokane and Yakima, Wash., this
week.
Party Returns from -Stay
at Beaches
Mesdames Stella Merrick, George
Treichler, H. V. Lumsden and Mae
Amo have returned to this city from
spending several days at Crescent
City and Bandon. They report won
derful weather at the beaches.
ActW Club Dance
Is Saturday Night
Members of the younger set are an
ticipating the dancing party to be
given by the Active club Saturday
night at St. Mark's Guild.
Music for the event will be fur
nished by Ike Porter's band and ar
rangements are In charge of Ralph

College Women to Meet
With Mrs. Chas. Wing
Mrs. M. J. Norria will speak of eco
nomic problems and International law
before the meeting of the Rogue River
Valley College Women's club Satur
day afternoon, which will be held at
the home of Mrs. Chas. Wing.
The club will sontlnue the study
of the book, "Building the World
Society. Mrs. I. E. Williams, s
social chairman, and Mrs. Rawles
Moore -as musical chairman, will add
much to the program for the after
noon. Guild Postpones
Card Party a Week
The St. Mark's Guild card party,
scheduled for Friday afternoon, has
been postponed until October 18, ac
cording to announcement made late
yesterday.
On Friday, October 0, the regular
guild meeting Is to be conducted at
the Parish hall, with all members
requested to be present at 3:30 p. m.

dolyn Woodcock will pour tea.
Zulelma Temple Meets
For Luncheon Saturday
Members of Zulelma temple, Daugh
ters of the Nile, will meet for lunch
eon at the Hotel Holland, Saturday
at 12:30. Luncheon will be followed
by a meeting at the Masonic temple.
Mrs. H. G. Enders of Ashland, Queen
of Zulelma temple, will preside, and
Medford members of the temple will
be hostesses for the afternoon.

To Visit In Portland
Mrs. S. 5. Smith and daughter, Mrs.
Guy Phetteplace, plan to spend this
week-end In Portland visiting Mrs.
Phetteplace's daughter, Miss Joan De
Losh, who Is a student at St. Helen's

Mrs, Alin J. Lowrey of San Fran
cisco arrived on the Shasta this
noon to spend some time on Rogue
river with her father, Captain O. N.

Following aa automobile trip of
6700 miles, during which time they
did not experience any trouble, Mr
and Mrs, O. C. Furnas returned to
Medford Tuesday from Akron, Ohio,
where they attended the two-day
Goodyear frolic. They were accom
panied east by Ray Sloneker.
Having one the summer sales con
test in the 11 western states, Mr
Furnas of the Medford Service Sta
tion was the guest of the Goodyear
company to attend the frollo In
Akron September 21 and 22. They
left Medford September 12.
'I have never seen anything hap
pen so smoothly and Interestingly
in my life," Mr. Furnas stated yes
terday. "The whole affair started
Monday morning, and we didn't
stop until Tuesday evening."
He told how the company bad
chartered 15 large stages, and how
they were taken to the various places
of Interest In the city. Among the
outstanding events was the trip to
the dock of the U. S S. Akron,
which was recently launched.
Although the 300 dealers could
not make a trip In the giant ship,
they were taken for short rides
above Akron In two private blimps,
one carrying six passengers at a
time, and the other carrying eight.
The wives of dealers were enter
tained In separate parties, and were
also taken for air rides.
Mr. Furnas said one of the most
Interesting events was the serving
of Furnas Ice cream at the banquet
the opening night. The famous
confection was frozen In the form
of miniature blimps.
While on their trip, Mr. and Mrs.
Furnas visited his relatives at Chil
llcothe and Llnneus, Mo., and also
In southern Kansas. Mr. Sloneker
visited relatives In Meadvllle, Mo.,
and Mr. Furnas stopped In South
Pasadena on the return trip to visit
her relatives.
Mr. Furnas also won the summer
sales contest In 1938, at which time
he was presented a large plaque.
