Spools, entertainment has been
arranged for tonlght'a meeting of
the Medford merchant!. The session
called for 8:30 by the retail trade
division of the chamber of commerce
li for the purpose of outlining trade
promotion activities for the fall and
winter season.
Christmas opening plans will be
considered and announced following
the meeting.
OLD STAGE ROAD
PLACE HAS FIELD
Tot centuries poets have sung of
the rosebud. Oscar Wilde, Imprison
ed, found in Its dewy chalice sym
pathy and beauty. Painters have Im
mortalised a "bawl of roses" but
few artists have let their Imaginations
take sufficient flight to visualize a
field of them. But laymen passing
down the Taylor road s few miles
northwest of Medford, each day
breathe the fragrance from the blos
soms of 60,000 rose bushes.
The three-acre field running from
the mountain which marks the Old
Stage road Is dotted with the color
scheme of 100 varieties. Red roses,
yellow roses, white roses, pink, deep
crimsons and sunburst shades lift
their blosoms to the early autumnal
bresee, which takes from them a
wealth of perfume.
Bow upon row of roses extend from
the road to the end of the track. The
thorns of their branches Interlock
across the small pathways to evade
the Intruder. But they are always
cut away and when late fall comes,
O. T. Lester, manager of this branch
of the Villa Nurseries, says the roses
will be removed, sold and shipped
away.
They were planted on the Taylor
road In the spring. Since then they
have never been sprayed; cultivation
and Irrigation have constituted their
only care. Their present location Is
Ideal, not far away from the H. D.
McCaskey home, where southern Ore
gon's most beautiful roses are grown.
The field affords a clear view cf
the Table Rocks In the north, Roxy
Ann and Mt. Pitt In the east, the
Stsklyous In the south and In the
west the mountains of which It Is
almost a part.
Among the most choice roses grown
are the Claudius, Oeorgus and Angelo
Pernet, representing pink, yellow and
a glorious combination of the two.

GOES THRU CITY
On a two-months concert tour
from Washington, D. C, a 45-plece
TJ. 8. army band passed thru Medford
this morning, enroute to Klamath
Falls where they were scheduled to
give an afternoon and evening per
formance today. They were taken
from Ashland to Klamath Palls by
stages.
The band played In Roseburg yes
terday, and following ttie Klamath
engagement, will Journey south.
Their schedule Includes 38 cities,
where they give two performances
at each. The tour Is made under the
auspices of colleges and various civic
organizations, with advance arrange
ments being made by O. O. Cappel.
Enroute west, they played at West
Branch, Xowa, Hoover's home town;
Des Moines, Iowa, where the G. A. R.
convention was In session; and In Lin
coln, Nebr where both concerts were
attended by General John Pershing.
