JUVENILE JUDGE
Five youth tanging trom 10 to
18 yesrs In sge, and trom midget
to giant In size, appeared before
Judge Alex Sparrow ol the Juvenile
court this morning, for alleged thefts
ranging from chickens to autoa. It
developed there were two eeuses ol
their atraylng from the atralght
paths etaylng out lata nights, and
home environment.
Bernard Wilder, 18. of Oranta Pan,
In a written statement, admitted he
took parked autos when ha found
them, and the notion to steal moved.
He stole, he aald, to drive between
this city and Oranta Pass. If there
was property In the csrs. he took
It. and hid It In woodsheds. He
balked at going to school and liked
to take girls for auto rides. Kin
aald they 'could do nothing with
him. and Chief of Police Olatus
MoCredle told the court his father
deserted his mother before he waa
born.
A. Hart, alleged leader of the
Phoenix chicken thief gang, after
three days In Jail, was sentenced to
the state reform school and paroled
with the promise he "would come
home nights and mind his folk."

to the court. Chief of Police Mc

the motors to sell and buy a
bicycle, something that he always
wanted. He rode- Royston's wheel,
but wanted one of bis own. He
would not steal, ha aald, a bicycle
belonging to another boy, but felt
It was not bad to steal from men
to buy a wheel. The Chief of Police
said ha was of a roving family, "and
had been a nuisance all summer
with his stealing." He waa arrested
last summer, and was freed upon
the representation of , his parents
that they Intended to leavs.
It was Royston's second entangle
ment with the law, in 30 day the
police said.
All were placed on probation, after
stern lectures.

Washington today.
The average gain In prominent is

Obituary,
RICHARDS Harvey Richards, 64,
of the Ruch district, who had been
working at Crater Lake all sum
mer, died at the Community hos
pital last night, following a long
siege of asthma. He Is survived by
hta wife and one daughter, also
relatives In the east. Mr, Richards
became suddenly worse yesterday
morning and was brought down to
the hospital by lake employees.
The high altitude of the lake
had been bothering .Mr. Richards
all summer, but he thought to
finish the fall work there. He naa
been a resident of the valley for
many years, and his death Is mourn
ed by a host of friends. Funeral
arrangements will, be announced
later by the Perl Funeral Home.

According to figure compiled by
the county clerk. 165.3700 will b
the total amount, required for ope
ration of high schools end grade
schools next year, and the sum la
mandatory under Oregon law, and
Immune from reduction. Zt means
that other fund will be reduced by
the budget committee to keep within
the six per cent limitation law.
The estimate for high schools next
year la placed at 958,000, a 17000
Increase, and with no allowance for
bus transportation. This la a 28.9
per cent Increase.
For county schools $107,27030 la
estimated, a 13.9 per cent Increase.
The Jaw provides a levy of 10 for
each of the 0908 school student,
a dime levy for each student for
the library fund and $100 bonus for
each of the 73 achool district hav
ing 1C0 or more days of achool.
An Increase of 313 in school at
tendance over last year, la shown by
the latest census.
The law also provides, that no
matter what the school levy, the
general levy must be kept ' within
the 0 per cent tax limitation law.
The law also provides, that- the
general road levy shall not be less
than one mill. There are also many
