dates agreed upon for the race, and
Lipton's yachts, as well as those of
the New York club, were hauled up
on the ways for an Indefinite period.
Then came the great contest of
1920, when Shamrock and Resolute
were pitted against each other for
what proved to be the most spectac
ular of all the International races
since the British defeat In 1851. sir
Thomas actually won two of the five
races, and had the satisfaction of
seeing one of ht& Shamrocks cross the
finish line a victor for the first time
since he began racing In America.
"I have looked forward to this mo
ment for 21 years, and now I am
happy," he said as Shamrock swept
majestically over the line. In tola
optimism he ordered a special casket

' Interesting Career
Aside from his long and ardent
yachting career, the life of Sir Tho
mas Llpton was full of many Inter
esting features, although the weather-beaten
sportsman himself waa
reluctant to admit It.
"Something about myself other
than yachting?" he once saitt to
a group of newspapermen who ask
ed about his life. "That's I fear,
would be like playing Hamlet with

STATE CONTROL
IS
CHEYENNE. Wyo., Oct. 2. (AP)
A plan for a cooperative effort by
western states to obtain control of
the public domain lands within their
boundaries will be placed before the
Western Governors' conference at
Portland, Ore., this month by Gover
nor A, M. Clark.
"It appears that both President
Hoover and Secretary of the Interior
Wilbur are Inclined toward an atti
tude favorable to tfte western states
In connection with public domain
lands," Governor Clark said.
"We should strike while the Iron
Is hot and all the western states
should join In the movement. It Is
one of the most Important matters
pending at present,
"Not only should the states have
the surface rights to public domain
lands but they should be given the
mineral rights also."
Governor Clark said it may be
years before there again will be both
a president and a secretary of tne
Interior who view with favor state
control of the public domain. For
this reason he said action should be
taken by the states to acquire control
during the present White House ad
ministration.
Governor Clark probably will at
tend the conference as one of the
Wyoming delegates. He plans to take
with him men who have studied the
public domain situation.
Among them will be Dr. A. G.
Crane, president of the University of
Wyoming; Charles E. Winter of Cas
per, former congressman from Wy
oming, and Perry Jenkins, member
of President Hoover's commission on
public lands.
