Introduce Vaporub
In Stainless Form
"Our advertising appropriation for
this season hns been more than dou
bled. As In the post, the great bulk
of this money will be spent tor
newspaper space. And also as In
the past we expect it to bring U
satisfactory returns."
That is the aggressive policy an
nounced by Vlck Chemical Co.,
makers of Vtcks VapoRub the moat
widely used preparation in its field.
Despite Its enormous distribution
with over 26 million Jars used yearly
its makers are unwilling to stand
still In their advertising and sale
effort.
This year. It Is to be noted, VlckJ
VapoRub Is to be introduced In
now white, stalulew form. Advertis
ing announcement of the new white
Vicks will open the season's advertis
ing program shortly. The original
amber Vlcks. so familiar in the
millions of American homes, will
not be discontinued. Users will
simply have their choice of tlie
two forms original amber or stain
less white. Both, Its makers as
sure, are the same Vlcks. In the
new white Vlcks, only the color
stain has been removed made pos
sible by a newly developed process.
The Vlck policy of going after new
business with Increased advertising
and sales effort Is the more im
pressive in view of the fact that
their advertising expenditures have
never been decreased because of gen
eral business conditions. Their pres
ent attitude towards business is In
encouraging contrast to many of the
country's producers and advertisers.
Here !s an outfit that doesn't
nollove In "mark'g time" in periods
of depression. They evidently feel
that Vlcks VapoRub has not reached
Ute saturation point and that the
f petition of a stainless form of thle
appeal to more new users as well ae
make for increased use by many ot
Its present users.
Such au attitude Is considered ae
eucouraging to business generally.
After all. "general business" le Just
a term for all the five million Indi
vidual concerns of the country
whose combined total effort estab
lishes what Is called "general busi
ness conditions." The thought seems
now to be crystal 1 zing In practical
minds that old man "general busi
ness" will grodually get better a
and when more and more concerns
large and small start doing their
own "turning up" as Vlck Is doing
now.
In this connection, a bit of Vlck
history is Interesting. Their aggres
sive program for this particular year
may appear very unusual to an
outsider In view ot present condi
tions but It Is morely following
precedent for this old established
company, Vlcks was barn in a time
of depression, for- years ln-r
in the gloomy business season oi
19. -the fir t reol Vlck company
was organized to get national dis
tribution, and tt was In this period
of financial distress that their first
aggressive newspaper advertising to
Introduce Vlcks VapoRub nationally
was started. Since then Vlcks nas
never worried about "the glooms."
Success atcended that first errom
and in all the years since througn
prosperity and depression alike
the Vlck slogan of use has graau-
ally moved up. From a million Jaiw
a year attained after the struggles
of those introductory years its u
moved up to 17.000,000 a year-
then to 21.000.000 and now otoi
26.000.000 Jars are used yearly."
