, Chapter 9 " ,
is HONOR AMONG THIEVES .
HEN Gabreau went back to the
parlors Molly enquired about
Juanlta, She had watched the pan
tomime at the roulette table, par
ticularly after Juanlta had gone to
her room. Dlvitt usually came over
to the cage during the evening,
keeping in touch with what was go
ing on. Tonight he seemed to be
avoiding lief. Molly was troubled
by this, linking lt with Jnanlta's in
disposition and bis subsequent in
terview with Lcdbetter and Fouche.
The Interview had been a smiling
affair, and Dlvitt had at once to
explain and to make light. Then
Ledbotter had written a note, and
Gabreau had gone out, with lt.
Gabreau explained now, and Molly
was relieved. ' The. tncidont had
nothing to do, she saw, ulth Divltt's
avoidance of her. -; . . , 1
Molly watched Gabrean take his
station between the two front win
dows, ... .' . , .:.,.x.. !
The evening wore on. Few were
left in the room beside the group
at the roulolto wheel. Kirk Btanard
leaned over Mrs. Bolalso, appar
ently saying that they must leave.
Mrs. Belalsa' shook her head, laid
down a coin. Molly saw Dlvitt look
at Gabreau. ..'. ,
Gabreau- came slowly from his
station against the wall.: Slowly he
passed along the group at the rou
lette wheel,' very slowly behind
Mrs. . Belaiso's chair. Molly,
watching saw Mrs. Belalse's painted
shawl brushed to the floor. Kirk
Stnnnrd bent to pick it up,. but Ga
bronu had paused and now placed it
carefully, about the lady's shiulders
as lt in apology for having brushed
it from the chair. Then he went
on nnd took hts station against the
wall.
Kirk Stnnard had persuaded
Mrs. Holalae to leave. As she rose
somothlng glittering- slipped down
her white dress to the floor. She
stood protesting while Kirk folded
the painted shawl more closely
about her; and led her out, followed
!hy Lodbetter and Fouchd, the bright
thiug that bad slipped down her
dross lying under the roulette table.
- Dlvitt bowed them out, returning
to the deserted wheel, whero Ga
breau was putting things to rights,
When they camo away the bright
thing that had bocn under the table
-was gono.
The Inst playora wore leaving.
Dlvitt and Gnbrcau began to clear
the tables. Dlvitt glanced at Molly
a llttlo bright-eyed bird, watching
from hor cage. , "Get to bod, kid,
ho said.
. She came out. closing and locking
the glided door. As she passed him
she touched his sleove, n little un
spoken "good night" to which he re
sponded with a nod. . -
Molly had reached the door of her
room when the gate hell rang. In
tho. dark of the court she watched
Gabreau- answer It. Kirk, Stanard
entered, hurried Into the parlors
whero Dlvitt was putting out the
lights, . t .
"Mrs. Tlolnlse has lost something,"
lie said. "I'd like to See If It's here."
Dlvitt switched on the lights'.
"Sho wns nowhero but tho roulette
wheel," he romnrked, and drew
bark tho cover. Ho and Kirk looked
underneath. : ,
"It was i her necklace," Kirk said
then. ''She didn't miss it till she
got home." - i !..-
"You looked in ' the car,- of
course?" Dlvitt asked.
Kirk nodded. "We've looked In
evory plausible place hurriedly, of
course. She knows sho had -it on
wituo sno was playing., sue re
members fingering it.'-v i :
' "She probably loosened It then.
I'll have Clnhrenu look on the side
walk. Walt till I got my-flnsh,
Kirk and lianreau went out on
tho sidewalk, Dlvitt going first with
his flash. . Thoy returned presently.
Dlvitt offering his condolences. "I
dislike such things to happen here.'
ho said. "You will advertise, of
course."
"I shall try to get It In tontghl"
Kirk answered, and was gone. I
, Molly C"Hncd her "door, soorf for
tan Instant In tl(e '. dark, '"'then
switched on the light at the bed's
head. Her coat and hat lay on the
the bed, for Molly had been that
afternoon to see the doctor, had not.
got home till time to hurry into the.
parlors. . She gathered them up nowJ
hat and coat-r-placed them, in the;
armoire. Then she sat down on th
bed's edge, rumpling the. satin!
spread, staring ' into the dim, old
room.
"It's a hell of a place to bring m
baby to," she Bald. . . . .. t I
At noon next day Dlvitt sent forj
Juanlta to pome to his office. Divltt's'
office was directly, over, the' room,
that ho shared with Molly lA'doop
had been cut In the wall that sep
arated It from the Hotel TIJon,
making lt accessible to either place,
No denizen of the house Invaded-tha
upper balcony where It passed Div
ltt's office; so Juanlta walked there
for the first time. 1
.Here alone. Molly's hand .was not
visible. , Uncarpeted floor, dust,
shabby desk, and - chairs. '., Dlvitt
rose as Juanlta entered, motioned
her to chair., ,. :.: ...,. .
In tho dress of black silk with:
buttons at wrist and belt,,. her;
hair knotted smoothly, she was- a',
different person - from the young
woman he had seen that -first night,
tumbled1 and distraught,, yet beau-:
tlful withal. Dlvitt had -watched
lassitude come over the girl, had;
realized that : - something-' had:
snapped somewhere. :: y He ' . 'had
thought that in this; relaxed state;
Bhe would confide In some one inj
Molly, certainly knew that her sl-i .
lence was due to the gavity of hen
secret. The knowledge satisfied him!
for the moment. ''',)
Juanlta had been an asset, greater,
than he had foreseen. r She had;
magnetism, enhanced by mysteryj
Molly's Idea of the veil had been'
good. Its protection had .given!
coupled, with Molly's. cleverljr
planted explanation of it, had ad
vertised both Juanlta and the place.'
Eric Lodbetter had unquestionably:
come solely to see her, also the dts-:
tingulshed Mexican who brought:
Kirk Stanard's card.
But Juanlta must mot be- so
touchy about the veil. She had-left
the group last night simply because
Fouche had Joked about snatching
It off. The rumor of this touchiness
would get about; destroying what
ever charm she derived from her
attire. Dlvitt had been a little
astonished, however, .at the clever
ness with, .which Juanlta. had es
caped from the contretemps of lost
night that kiss she had left upon
Ledbettcr'e Jnwj He' would have
thought she was developing an un
suspected coquetry,- had she -nbt
gone III to her room and failed to
return. '-.., ;
He would not have Ledbetter or
any one else snatching off her veil.
The parlors should preserve at least
the .decorum of a- Mnrdl Gros
parado In -which every mask Is re
spected.:: And so he had made tlvnt
romark to Ledhcttor about Turkish
ladles and modesty. "You have
lived In Turkey, sir, and know how
modest Turkish ladles can be whore
their faces are concerned."
Juanila's terror of discovery
would be an asset in what ho had
In mind, but it. must bo quieted In
a measure. - It would soon he
known for terror, and would create
a worse situation than the rumor
of her prudery. However, he would
not speak of that now, 1 ,
Dlvitt took a newspaper, from his
desk, handed It to Juanlta. "Will
you . rood what I have marked,
Seflorlta?"
Juanlta's eyes ran down the page.
"LOST: Sannhlre' necklnc,. Rpwn
larj?e stonra. IMatlnum links. Llbornl
reward. Kirk stanard."
Juanlta read and waited. Dlvjtt
tossed the paper on his desk.
"I wonder, Soflorlta," ho said, "If
I can trust you to return that
necklace." ; i
She looked at him. "Return if?"1
"It was lost here-rlast. night.
Under the roulette table. I should
llko you to return lt, refusing1 the
reward." j
It was , inrrcdlblo both .com
mands. . "You'd enjoy doing that,
wouldn't yotiT" Dlvitt asked.
., She hesitated. "It that s all,"
sho said. ; ! ' '
Dlvitt smiled. "Ytm are ausplc
ous, Seflorlta. Have you never
heard that there Is honor among
thieves?" -
"I am not a thief."
"I trust you are not Implying'
that you will fall to deal honorably
with us In this matter. I shouM
have to be certain before I .sent
you on this first errand of liberty."
