j Furniture
; Thomas Sheraton, born In 1761, is
commonly known as an occentrlc
genius but this same singular and
peculiar genius seems to be responsl
ble for the style which has become
so well known by his name altho dur
ing his life time It won for him
nether recognition nor material re
ward.
As a poor boy, Sheraton was denied
all but the mere rudiments of an edu
cation. He taught himself drawing
and was, In all likelihood, appren
ticed at an early age to some local
cabinet maker.
For the greater part of his life he
wandered about the country, an ob
scure cabinet maker, preacher, writer,
artist, mathematician, and mechanic.
Religion always played a very Im
portant part In the life of this un
usual man and It Is as a writer on
religious subjects that we first hear
of Sheraton tho he always refers to
himself as a mechanic. 4
In 1790 he went to London and
opened a small shop, which seems
also to have served as a residence,
and there he carried on a small busi
ness. He :probably made a limited
amount of furniture from his own
designs, and at the same time exe
cuted orders for others, notable
among whom was Robert Adam. He
cordially hated all of his contempor,
arles for he was the vlotlm of envy,
Jealousy, poverty and religious fana
ticism, a combination which prevent
ed his success all thru his life.
Nevertheless he believed In his own
work and was an artist with a keen
understanding of beauty. Altho In
fluenced by the Adam Brothers and
even more by the Louis XVIth mod
els, Sheraton's style Is Individual.
One of his characteristic marks was
ths use of graduated or tapering
flutes and reeds. He preferred stralgnt
lines and perpendicular effects, but
always slender graceful forms. Shera
ton's furniture Is always aristocratic
and at home wherever good breeding
and gentility give favor to courtesy.
Mahogany, satlnwood, tulip, rose
ebony, harewood and stained holly
were all used by this expert cabinet
maker, but Japanned and painted
woods were also UBed to obtain a
rich effeot with little expense. A deli
cate inlay of wood is especially char
acteristic and his furniture was usual
ly veneered, altho he himself pre
ferred solid satlnwood for chairs, us
this permitted the use of a, certain
amount of carving in low relief.

ininity Is taking the. pajama's place
In the boudoir.
Trousered costumes, so popular as
lounging robes last season and still
supreme on tho beach, are giving way
to sweeping negligees which give
Madame an air of 'voluptuous ele
gance in keeping with the mode.
Satin, silk and lace; flattery, fem
ininity and grace these are the out
standing notes of the new mode for
t,he boudoir.
Supple shimmering satins, in tho
peach and apricot hue) which give
rosy light to the face, are richly
trimmed with beige Alencon or Ra
cine lace.
There Is none of the be-ruffled De
nounced effect of the gay nineties in
these new negligees. Their lines are
trim, their designs comparatively
slmplo, their laces applied In flat
cut-out Incrustations around t,be
throat, sleeves and hem.
Necklines are often surplice,
sleeves are large enough to give an
air of grace, and hemlines never
trail the floor but clear It, by three
or four inches. "A number of the
hems are cut to give a modified flare
reminiscent of a Spanish dancer's
swirling skirt. .
For the woman who docs not care
for lace there are plain satin, crepe
or triple georgette negligees, 'the
distinction of which lies In their
sophisticated simplicity and the
sweep of wide butterfly sleeves.

season. Several of these. In rich ruby
or emerald tints, are designed with

The art of "Cold Cookery" Is quite
as fascinating In this season as Is
the old craft of food preparation by
means of heat,
Nowadays you hear
of "B r e f rigerator
Meals," "Frozen
Salads," "Chilled
Soups" and so on
without thinking
how strange such,
expressions would
have sounded Just
a few years ago.
The electric
frlgerator has
brought this
change and pos
slblllty to us and
we have welcomed the many delight
ful uses both for "cooking" and
saving in a most enthusiastic man
ner. In fact, It seems to me that
we ar6 asking almost too much of
our refrigerator sometimes by load
ing It to the utmost and then for
getting to defrost so that It may do
the work we are expecting of it. It
might not be amiss to remind house
wives that a chilling unit cannot be
most efficient when covered with a
thick coat of frost. Not only Is tho
unit less efficient but it will take
more electricity to keep the cabinet
cold and consequently cost more to
operate the machine. This isn't fair
on either side I This defrosting may
be done easily at night. Just re
move the Ice cubes and keep them
on a food shelf tt)en disconnect the
motor of the machine and be sure
that the pan to catch the melting
frost Is In place. In the morning
the machine Is still cool and reody
to start freezing when the motor
starts working again. See that the
machine is started well and the cab
inet wiped dry If any moisture Is
found on the shelves or bottom after
the defrosting..
Now let us glve vou some new
recipes: .
Banana Sherbet.
1 ,i cups boiling water
1 cups sugar.
2 teaspoons gelatin
3 tablespoons cold water
2 tablspoons minced nut meats
4 bananas -
4 tablespoons lemon juice
' teaspoon salt
1 cup whipping cream
, Soak gelatine in cold water. Boll
sugar end water 10 minutes and
combine with gelatine. Mash ba
nanas to pulp and odd to first
mixture with lemon juice and salt.
Freeze to mush then add beaten
cream and nuts and flnlBh freezing.
, Apricot Halad.
1 can apricots
1 teaspoon almond extract
Vanilla Ice cream.
Cook apricots slowly In syrup from
can and flavor with one teaspoon
of almond extract. ChlU. Put halves
of fruit together with ice cream and
arrange on salad plate with mac
aroons. Orange Mousse Layer.
2 teaspoons gelatine
2 taplespoons cold water
cup sugar.
Orated rind and juice 6 oranges
Grated rind and Juice 1 lemon
1 pint whipping cream
4 tablespoons powdered sugar
1 teaspoon orange extract.
Soak gelatine In cold water and
melt over hot water. Combine with
fruit juices, rinds and sugar and
heat until the sugar Is melied. Pour
into freezing tray and cool, then
cover with whipped cream combined
with powdered sugar and extract.
Return to freezing compartment and
finish process.
Fresh Peach Sherbet.
1 cup peach pulp
1 cup sugar
54 cup white corn syrup
4 tablespoons lemon Juice
1 tablespoon gelatine
2 tablespoons cold water
24 cups milk
Combine the first four Ingredients
and let stand one hour. Boak gela
tine in cold water, dissolve over hot
water then combine with first mix
ture. Add the, milk slowly to pre
vent curdling. ' Pour Into troys to
freeze.
Fudge Ice Cream Snuce.
i cups sugar
cup white corn syrup
cup cream
3 tablespoons butter
3 teaspoons cocoa '
Mix all Ingredients and boll for
five minutes.
