Liechtenstein, the Alpine princi
pality which leaped Into the news
in the United States through the
marriage In London of pnn. jn.
hann of Liechtenstein to Miss Aleene

recalls the heyday 6f Anthony Hope
and his Ruritania stories and plays.
- Romance lurks in every corner ol
this little principality, bordered by
the Rhine, wedged In between Aus
tria and Switzerland and studded
with stage mountains which rise
to a height of over 8000 feet.
The principality is onlv 85 sauare
miles in area. It has onlv about 11.-
000 Inhabitants, and Its capital Va
duz, is a village of Ies3 than 2000.
Although the principality was not
founded until 1719. the ruling fam
ily dates back to the 13th century.
Land of Yoilelers.
Liechtenstein was part of the Holy
Roman Empire. In the early years
of the loth century it was included
tn the Rhine federation and from
1815 until 1866 it was In the Ger
man federation, since 1866 It has
been wholly Independent and with
out any army.
Despite the lack of military uni
forms there Is plenty of picturesque
background. That Is supplied by
the standardized garb of civil em
ployes and the colorful peasant cos
tumes, fashioned after those of the
Austrian Tyrol. It Is a land ot
yodelers and shepherds and wine
growers, a land of corn, cattle and
sheep.
Prince' Johann. who Is expected to
visit the United States with his
bride, is the third line of descent
In the royal family. The present
ruler. Prince Francis. Is 78 years
old and has no children. He was a
bachelor until a year ago. But the
second line of succession contains
a score of princes of all ages, so
there Is little likelihood that Prince
Johann will ever rule the tiny realm.
Neutral In War.
Prince Johann was formerly an
Austrian midshipman. Until 1919
Liechtenstein was closely allied with
Austria. It adopted Swiss cur
rency in 1921 and has been in the
Swiss Customs Union for seven
years. Switzerland also administers
Its telegraph and postal service.
In the great war Liechtenstein
declared Its neutrality, but Austria
declared It within the war zone.
Tn.Httle prlnolpality. tried to get
into the League of Nations, but was
rejected. " It suffered terrible eco
nomic depression as a result of Its
isolation during the war.
Prince Francis I. the present ruler,
succeeded his brother In 1929 and
gave up all his estate except 22
castles, before he ascended the
throne.

tile fields.
After receiving diplomas In fin
gerprint and detective work from
a correspondence school. Conger
set to work. The city council
employed him as an undercover
agent, to pay him 40 per cent of
all fines collected. Tuesday he
swore out warrants for 11 persons
he declared were bootleggers. All
but one were convicted and each
fined 100. Conger's pay for the
first 10 days amounted to $400.

MOSCOW ( AP) Dollars are in
great demand In Russia.
Since the rouble has no standing
tn international exchange, t.he gov
ernment needs dollars as well as
other foreign currencies with which
to settle for its purchases abroad.
Getting them from foreigners Is
one way of obtaining them.
As the sole shop-keeper of the na
tion, the government for this pur
pose, and also for the convenience of
strangers in Russia, has set up spec
ial stores In Moscow and other cen
ters, catering to foreigners and in
whitVi only "valuta," or foreign
money, may be spent.

These stores are called "torgsln"
( trade with foreigners) . and the
goods they offer Include both food
and general merchandise or a type

He returned with nine records to
his credit, two of them representing
lowering of his own marks.
His best average Bpeed was 222.2
miles an hour, made by flying from
London to Berlin, a distance of 600
miles. In two hours and 67 minutes.
The lowest average speed was made
between Copenhagen nnd Amsterdam,
