STARTS ERUPTION
IN WIZARD ISLAND
CRATER LAKE NATIONAL PARK,
Ore., Aug. 8. For the first time since
It was In eruption countless centuries
ago, columns of smoke arose Friday
from Wizard Island, cinder cone In
Crater Lake, and a portion o( Its
rocks were not as In the days of yore.
A quarter of ..an acre of the Island
was Involved and required the serv
ices of several park rangers to place
the situation under control.
A careless smoker is believed to
have discarded a cigarette as he was
climbing about the Island. The burn
ing stub ignited a mass of decom
posing leaves and needles among the
lava rocks and burned old dead logB
that had lain there for Innumerable
years, ; ' '-;
The fire caused no damage but was
difficult to place under control due
to the position of the flaming hem
lock and pins needles several feet
down In rock creavasses. A fire pump
was brought to 'the scene and water
was played on. the flames several
hours.
The fire was confined to an area
close to shore aid ,sent forth such a

an aerlallst for two yean and has

filed a motion in the circuit court
asking that Roy a. Petoh, who is,
suing the defendants for 818,000 for
alleged Injury to his eyesight, make
more "definite and certain" portions
of the complaint and eliminate other
portions, held as lrrevelant or' Im

The defense asks that there be
stricken, portions of the complaint,
citing "that plaintiff Is. the father
of five minor children," and, reier
ences to medical views anent the
future of his eyesight. . i
The defense also seeks to have
the plaintiff to make more dellntte

the door to a room containing' pow
erful lights.

An official meeting of the South
ern Oregon Oaa corporation was
held In the form of a banquet in
the private dining room of the Hotel
Del Rogue at Grants Pass Friday
evening, August 7. The meeting
was one of a series of get-togethers
being held by the Southern Oregon
Gas corporation with the object in
mind of exchanging better business
Ideas and the prospects for future
business. In spite of the supposed
business depression now Invading
the country, each dlstrlot manager
stated that due to the Increase In
confldencee and-desire for gas ser
vice, the prospects In buying ga,
equipment were Increasing and show
ing a tendency toward continual
growth.
