A. of L. C, met at the home of R, A. Newland, BUI East Ninth street Monday evening for the first session since organisation was fleeted June 31, Officers elected to head the auxili ary at that tlmo were Mrs. Helen Moff, president; Mrs. Leila Morrow, president, and Mrs. Pearl Newland. secretary-treasurer. Mrs. Newland and Mrs. Neff were delegates to tho Salom conVontlon, which was held July 11, t which time a state auxiliary was organised with Mrs. Orace Todd of Portland, president, and Mrs. Pearl Newland of Medford, state treasurer. The meeting Monday evening was held as a get-acqualnted mooting althouf.l the ladles transacted some business. Among other things was the extraction of a dollar from their husband's pockets, which was no mail task. In fact Mrs. Harry Law son had to chase her husband across the lawn several times before getting tho money, but when she did catch him irte took a five dolls.- bill. J. B. Clary of Ashland, who was comfortably seated on tilt lawn, watched the race with unconcern. While the ladles were having their business meeting, the carriers were called to order by their president, R. M. Bwsn, with M. I. Harper as secre tary, and a report of the Salem con vention was read by R. A. Newland, who attended as delegate. After the reading and a short discussion of various subjects t.'iey adjourned to partake of refreshments served by the ladles. , Members present were: Mr. and Mrs. Atllcl Neff, Mr. and Mrs. B. D. Scrlpter, Mr. and Mrs. R. s. Swan, Mr. and Mrs Harry Morrow. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lawson. Mr. and Mrs. M. . Harper, Mr. and Mrs. Hans Ram mln, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Cleary, Mr. and Mrs. R. A Newland . ., , t L Cheered up with long visits with relatives In Chicago and the sights of the eascerr. cities, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Y. Tengwald arrived :.i:ne Sat urday evening from their almost a month's trip cast, during which they spent most of the time at Chicago, tho farmer home of each, Carl Join ing , Mrs. Tengwald following the Cleveland, O.,', national. Shrine, con vention. ; ' While their stay In the east was enjoyable,; ths' only drawback being the hot weather that prevailed there during' their absence, which made them think of Oregon' usual green ness and coolness and long for It, they were greatly disappointed on arrival home to find the hot weather had followed, or reached here ahead of them. This was especially notable as they returned to the coast toy way of the Canadian Pacific route. But like Jerry Jerome, who return ed from the Cleveland convention a iweok sooner, they could talk for hours about the wonders of Chicago, especially Its modern handling of traffic, new big buildings and gen eral Illumination Inaugurated since they had last been In the great met- ropolltan city. Funny how. all the rorruer (Hilcago' residents" stand by that old burg. Carl spoke In polite terms of Cleve land as a beautiful large city, and referred to New York as a likely coming town. He found everywhere signs of the depression beginning to disappear, but was unkindly enougn to state that In Chicago's business streetswere remarkably free from panhandlers, compared with Cleve land, where during the Shrine con vention the streets were prolific with them, despite the efforts made by the Cleveland authorities to suppress all such street begging at that period. 3 MILES OF TOWELS AT Towels, 'towels, towels, three miles of them, will be offered tomorrow at.
