MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., July 31.
(AP) Science, apparently with its
back to the wall, was fighting today
to stem the tl)e of hordes of creep
ing, hopping and flying grasshoppers
which are playing havoc with, the
crops of Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska,
North and South Dakota.
At Dcs Moines, the Iowa capital,
plans were being made for a meeting
of entomologists and agricultural
leaders to devise means of combat
ting the hordes of insects which have
moved relentlessly across the Mis
souri river eastward. At the same
time Iowa state officials sought an
appropriation of $50,000 to flgi'it the
plague.
Meanwhile, militant farmers, armed
with poison mixtures, returned to
the fight.
More than 150,000 acres in Kittson
and Marshall count tes in northwest
Minnesota have been nearly erased
from the harvest picture. Polk county
is estimated to have suffered a fifty
per cent loss in grain crops. In a
dozen adjacent counties the defehse
fight goes on with local infestations
reported in more than half of the
counties In Vie state. These include
corn, potato, onions, as well as grain
growing areas.

SHANGHAI, July 31. (AP) Vast
areas of central China were under
water todav. hundreds, perhaps thou
sands, were dead and the prices of
foodstuffs soarerf thirty- per-cent in
many cities as the result of ono of
the worst floods In sixty years.
Crops were severely damaged, pre
saging a terrible famine during the
coming fall and winter.
An accurate estimate or the dcavi
toll could not be attempted because
of disrupted communications. It was
known that hundreds died m tne
Wuhan area, comprising the cities
of Hankow, Hanyang and Wuchang,
when dykes burst their bounds.
A report that 6000 pensnea in me
Cbangsha, Honan province district,
was considered exaggerated, however.
The foreign settlements or Hanxow
were inundated, but there were no
casualties among the residents.- T.hc
800 foreigners comprising these set
tlements, Including 100 Americans,
were forced to make their way about
the streets in sampans (Chinese
boats ) .
The Hankow correspondent or the
Associated Press reported the Yangtse
river at that point had risen higher
today than ever before tn tne nistory
of modern records. He said the
stream was still rising.
