BAKER, Ore., July S. (IP) Mrs.
I'.mma Fowler, 50, former LaGrando
city treasurer, was late yesterday
sentenced to a maximum term of
10 years In state prison as a result
of her conviction on a charge Ait
misappropriating more than $108,
000 of city funds,
. The court imposed no minimum
sentence. Judge Hall S. Lusk, who
imposed sentence, announced lie
would Ignore the state law provid
ing for a Tine of twice the amount
embezzled. Such a fine, he de
clared, would have to be served
out at the rate of fl a day. Ho
quoted a supremo court decision
to the effect that such a penalty
comes under t;ie tonus of the cu
stltutlnn prohibiting cruel nnd un
usunl punishment, and honco is il
legal. Sobs Denial
Asked If she had anything to
say, Mrs. Fowler declared: "As
God is my judge, 1 never took any
money rrom tne city of Lnuranue
or anyone else."
