HEAT MAY BRING
'ERE' WEEK ENDS
PORTLAND, . July 7, iV) The
butter market looked firmer today.
Prospects of reduced production
followed the thermometer as the
heat wave Intensified. Whether
or not an advance will bo forced
depends largely upon the extent of
the hotter weather. According
to talk in the t rad e, a n a d va nee
may bo expected before the eud
of tho week, especially In the
higher grades the one first ef'
foe tod by hot weathor.
Producers of buttcrfat may help
themselves liberally . by taking
good care of their product. One
of tho cardinal principals In the
production of high grade cream
In hot weathor is "keep it cool."
If producers will go to a little
extra bother handing cream and
speed up shipments as much as
possible, tho Increased slzo of the
cream check, duo to higher qual
ity cream will well repay ihom
for tho trouble.'
Tho egg market was considered
barely steady. Tho demand Mon
day was fairly good, but dealers
say they nro watching develop
ments closely nnd would not be
surprised to see the consumer do
mand slacked slightly.
There was Utile trading in poul
try in tho first two days of this
week. Higher temperatures re
duced consumer demand. Prices
were not changed, however
Another rise in watermelon
prices was forced In tho wholu
trade hy a continuation of tho hot
weather. Tho new price, Ih 2
cents-a pound to the trade and
no recessions from that prlro re
ported. Another ndvanco Is pre
dieted In tho trade before tho end
of this week, and somo sny more
than one.
Cnntaioupo prices followed quo
tatlons of watermelons to higher
levels, Iioth Imperial vnlley and
Delano offerings were up 25 cent?,
Country killed veal was nd-
vnnced cent a pound. Demand
for qunlity stuff Is good with
fair movement In lesa deslrabo of
ferings.
Dressed spring lambs wero
quoted at an ll-cent top. This
Is H cent under earlier quotations,
Offerings of npricots from The
Dalles increased. Good quality
offerings wero moving to the trade
at 75-80 cents. California of
ferings were 80 cents.
Corn prices were about n dime
lower in wholesale circles hero
Tuesday. Tho new market Is 40
cents.
Cucumbers were easier generally
in tho wholesale trade. Tho
oral market was quoted at
cents a box for field grown stuff.
A car oad of California Hlberta
