COUNTY ASSESS'
COSTS OF;
Jackson county yesterday receiv
ed "formal 'notice from-the state
board of control that the cost of
caring for Inmates- of state insti
tutions would be borne direct by
the countries, instead of the state
as in the. past. This means aboal
HWOO a year additional outlay to
the countyji ja '(';. .
.Ajiother tat Wiling affecting this
county was also promulgated in Sa
lem yesterday;' ian opinion of the
state attorney :gdileral holding that
great war widows, unmarried, are
entitled tovtlOOC .tax exemption.
The... state tax commission previ
ously held that they were not, and
k accordance (herewith the county
assessor made up his next' year as
eSBmen t. . I t will' now be 'neces
sary ;tb (fca nirbjiftM rile tak Tjffls
and ihak 9 ; the exemptions. , '
'Ruling' that the counties instead
of the state shall dispense funds
for the care of Inmates in state
institution In no wise lessens the
taxes. The county makes the levy
and handles the funds on the re
ceipt of a bill from the state. -Previously
the money was Included In
the state tax rund and the mono
was disbursed at Salem.
Jackson county's state tax this
year was approximately $92,000 and
the first half of taxes, for this
amount Jias been turned over to
the state. Many county courts of
the. state have i-filed ':. protests
againBt the move on the ground
that it is shifting the burden with
out reductions of cost from the
state to Jhe. county and by the
time - the next campaign rolls
around will be the high point of
orations, showing how the state
tax has been reduced.
