I Reports that Chinook salmon

i and had reached O rants Pass were
I prevalent in Medford last week,
, hut a visit hy several local anglers
J to the stream yesterday revealed
I that the fish hud nut yet made
their appearance. The salmon are
l not expected for another two or
j three weeks. However, quite a
; number of steelhead were seen in
j the river. The season on steel-
head is closed until April 13,
The two-headed trout, the sub
ject of mention ih this column
sometime ago, is still alive, report
ed a party of Medford visitors to
day, after having seen the freak
yesterday at the California state
fish hatchery in Mt. Shasta, City.
The trout has lived for 18 months
and has long exceeded its expected
; life span. It is still as active as it
j was last summer but has shown no
'growth. It continues to be about
t two inches in length with the
! heads joining each other at the
gills. As soon as one head stops
j eating and begins to waste away,'
the freak will die, hatchery atten-
dams say, and that is apt to hap
i pen most any time. In a trough
ill the other em! of the hatchery
s building housing the freak, there
'are about 20 small two-headed
1 fish, just hatchet! from the eggs,
j but all are expected to die as the
j old egg casing from which they
'emerged is cast off. Hundreds of
these freaks are hatched annually
there, but none have ever lived as
t long as the one that has now ex
jlsted for IS months.
One local deer hunter made the
suggestion today that all does and
fawns in the woods should he
caught and equipped with cowbells
to identify them from the bucks.
He pointed out that in this way
hunters would not have to worry
about shooting at anything that
had a bell ringing around Its neck.
He said this would save consider
able gaim; slaughter by hunters
who shoot before they seo the
horns, but he failed to offer any
method how to catch the fleet
footed docs and fawns to place the
hells on them.
j Judging from the number of
j pelts brought to the county clerk's
'office for county collection, tho
coyote population of Jackson
county continues to he large and
in sonic districts is increasing.
Some county residents have made
-a half dozen trips to the clerk's
office this season and plan to
make more before the end of next
mouth. Most of the coyotes are
t trapped but some ure shot hy
1 ranchers as they make raids on
. poultry flocks. William Grieve of
i Prospect brought in a pelt of a
.coyote he shot from his yard l;rt
i week just jh it was about to fit Id
J a flock "tf turkeys. It w;is one of
the kirgest animals killed this sea
1 son. A number of trappers, unable
1 to obtain good results in their
quest for fur-bearing animals have
devoted most of their time io
coyotes to eolleet the bounties on
their pelts and have been meeting
with better sueeess than In trap
ping for the former.
Ht ports say that in the western
states over 50M sheep and cattle
j are killed by predatory animals
evory 4 hours and is the strongest
j argument why predators houhl all
he destroyed. Poisoned moat has
J been used with some success, but
J tho use of poison has been frowned
upon as it makes innocent animals
as well as coyotes and wolves suf
i fer. There ure some Interests that
j would fjlve coyote mercy on the
t grounds that they dfspose of ro-
dents, but this stand is continually
meeting strong opposition from
cattlemen, ranchers and settlers.

FRIDAY NIGHT

On Medford
As Crucial:
Champion-.
Medford high school basketball
squad starts drilling this afternoon
for the first game of the annual
.-series with the Ashland high team
next Friday, with two of its main
stays crippled, iieil. guard, sus
tained a sprained ankle in the
Klamath Fails game last Friday
and Ciay is still limping from a
bad knee and strained tendon.
Clay may get into the Ashland
games, but Shell is out for the
season.
Both are fast and heady players
and their loss wilt be keenly felt.
Medford needs hut one of the
Ashland games, to cinch the dis
trict chain pioiishap and the right
to attend the state tournament at
Salem. The misfortune that has
befallen the Burgher ites has raised
the morale of the Lithians and
they will put up a hard battle to
down the locals at their weakest.
Mm! ford's only vantage ia playing
on their home floor.
AM i la ml Has Menace
The only menace on the Ashland
team Is Howell, mountainous cen
ter who ra n w tM in the t ra nt s
Pass game hist Friday. lie was
not good in the second half under
Hose guarding and Grants Pass nil
but nosed out the Grizzlies. Howell
will get someksc guarding and
some close refereeing. Because of
his size, valley referees have imitlc
allowances for his errors, but there
will he none of that with Halpit
Coleman, who regards a foul as a
foul, regardless of the size of the
foulee.
To take the place of Stieil.
Coaeli Burgher has White and
Walker, both dependable.
Coach Bliss of Ashland claims
he has a special offense ami de
fse fr the Medford style of
play, which he has been keeping
under cover all season, to spring at
the finish. It will have to work
better than any displayed in con
ference games si far.
Tlie largest crowd of the season
will see the Friday night game,
with fans from ail over the valley
in attendance.
