In Oregon met in Portland nnd
attempted to agree on a location
for the base, but were unable to
do so. Medford and others took
the Initiative and made an effort
lo secure it. but lacked the In- i
fluence to succeed, ns Is noted In I
the news dispatch from Washing- j
ton, and California wins again.
Sunnyvale is not well known In
comparison with other cities and
towns of that state, but suffice to
say California wins the coveted
base, which will require nn ex
penditures of several million dol
lars, and which will require a
ground force of from ifoo to 30a
men to maintain it.
The base is to be used as a
part of the defense of the Pacific
coast In the time of war and
reason dictates that a point half
way along the coast would be the
logical location, rather than Sun
nyvale, which is almost at 'the
extreme southern end of It. Hut
strategic location does not always
count in the establishment of gov
ernment projects. More often pol
itical pull is the determining fac
tor. Southwestern Oregon Is mid
way between our northern nnd
southern borders, but California
was able to exert sufricient in
fluence to win the base and make
its location at a point almost at
the southern extremity of our
long const line. Klamath Kails
