IN LOCAL AREA
The in u n I li I y meteorological j
notes for Januury. llKIl, prepared i
by W. J. Hutchison, head of the
l'. S. weather station of MedfordJ
read as follows:
M.ld winter weather prevailed
unintcri upt' d throughout January.
The predominant, o of cloud and
fog during the previous winter
months of l!t;ju continued prae
tlenlly unbroken. Occasional light
rains wero scattered through the
month, but the total amount of
precipitation falling was 50 per
tent below normal. TYmpeutures
were unusually moderate for the
season, and were generally well
and evenly dist ributed. No ox
(i ernes of high temperature . were
recorded. Minimum temperatures
were considerably higher than thc
average January low readings. ;
l?omparing the low temperature
of the past month with those of
January I'J'M), the ininimumu show
a daily average of H degrees high
er. During January, 1 13", the.
lowest temperature recorded was
:t degrees below zero, while the
lowest for the past month was 22
degrees above.
The continuation of the unusu
ally mild weather for the season
is due in part to the blocking In
fluence of a high pressure area
which lias remained practically
stationary with its center over
Idaho during the past winter
month. This high has at times
indicated a tendency to move east
ward a.s it normally Hhould, but
for the most part the pressure
condition has remained unchanged.
With this continued high pressure
condition the normal passage of
low pressure areas or storm areas
to the eastward is prevented and
as a result there is a lack of win
ter snows and rains.
Tho total precipitation for the
month wum l.:;t inches, which is
exactly half of the normal Janu
ary fall of 2.7S Inches. There was
no snowfall during the month
which is in considerable .contrast
to January of lfl;iu when a total
of 22.6 inches of snow fell. The
month Ik wind movement wa in
excess of the January average,
total of 324T miles having been re
corded. The prevailing wind di
rection was from tho south with
a n n vc ra ge h on rl y velocity of 4.4
miles per hour. There were two
periods of heavy wind movement
which were of short duration. Tho
maximum velocity attained was
:ili miles per hour, blowing from
the southeast. DenHO fog occurred
on 17 days. A light thunder-storm
was recorded on the Kith.
