A Mince Pie Phantasy
(As vlsloned hj- A. B. Willlamti)
There aura is no nco Hinting, least
wise to me It seems,
rir those erratic phantasies that
come to us ns dreams.
Our poor o'erburdened stomachs
get pretty much the blame, .
I'.ut surfeited or gaunted, we have
them just the same.
It must ha vp been an old-time
ditty thnt mother used to croon
About up among the little stars
sailing 'round the moon,
That broke into my slumbers, a
wraith from long ago
That caused the latest spasm Into
my mind to flow.
At uny rate, in fancy I was lifted
into space,
l:ir into the vaulted blue where
the stars all interlace.
How unlike that other dream you
remomber hear mo tell,
That dream of yesteryear when I
journeyed into hell,
l.iko he of magic carpet, I was
wafted thru tho sky.
Skimming on from star to star, in
the twinkling of nn eye,
Until at last 1 came to rest on n
broad expanse of land
All strange and weird to me eerie
sights on every hand.
At first, with shrinking step, I
ventured to explore
Until I finally arrived at a massive
padlocked door.
And ns I stood there gazing, the
gates swung open wide
And a monster genii beckoned me
to come inside,
lie questioned of my native heath,
the land that gave me birth,
And rather stammeringly I said I
hailed from planet earth.
"Well, now, that's curious," said he
"but at this very time,
I have some others here who mi
grated from that clime."
And sure enough I saw, as I wan
dered here and there,
More than a score of faces that
bore familiar air.
And to my astonishment, who else
should that bunch be
Hut. the Mail Tribune gang and
a wondrous sight to see.
There was Koppes trudging round
upon his weary feet,
Searching in vain, he said, for
something good to eat.
Perry was scrubbing decks on what
seemed to be a ship,
And .Hostel was doctoring some
giraffes for the pip.
Fergy was tacking carpet upon an
aero floor.
And Herb trying molasses thru i
straw of wheat to pour;
Kva was knitting booties for mon
ster centipedes,
And Irv.i was taking census of
bugs among the weeds;
.stennett was hunting, needles in a
mnssive sawdust pile,
And Owney, with a foot-rule, was
measuring off a mile;
Jim. Murray was doing dentistry
' on alligators' teeth, .
And Ken. was tearing into Fords,
lying on his back beneath.
McCoy was at a formula to win
the moon's last quarter...
And Hush, bnre-legged in a vat,
was mixing sand and mortar;
Myrtle was hemstitching shorties
for elephants;
Miss "Wilson typing bed sheets of
very great expanse;
Manke wan manicuring the toes of
billy goats .
And wild hairs was Otto plucking
from the tails' of squealing
s boats.
Dave was sticking feathers onto
a naked goose
And Kheley toting thistles to feed
a herd "f moose.
Hector trying to set a wren upon
some ostrich eggs,
Hunderlund making bung holes to
put in cider kegs;
Hngan nnd Behb were putting with
twenty-pound cannon balls,
And Hall Was putting arms and
leers on bodies of bahy dolls;
i ririr w.is climbimr trees to
niintm-n cwnrminir bees.
f Johnny chasing chipmunks, attired
n B. V. U. S.
Marge, a la Maud Muller, was rait
ing a field of hay,
And Mary carting it to barn upon
a one-horse dray.
Klllott was whittling corkscrews
from nrickley chaparral.
Crigsby tryi"S to make u donkey
warble a madrigal.
Thelma and Lois were busy trying
to Mini the squalls
Of a thousand crying babies with
scented catnip halls;
Paul and Puhl were making shoes
for hippopotami;
Snm and Phil wero stringing
nlothes on a nower line to dry;
Pick, fishing for turtles, was using
a hawser line.
And Laidley counting the quills on
n fretful porcupine.
Now one thing thnt I noted nnd
quite puzzling to me
Kach nnd every one of them seem
ed contended as could be.
Though the tasks seemed onerous,
pnnnch to ire a faint,
Prom the lips of nary one heard
I the least complaint.
l nuked thein Individually, "Why
In such contented frame?"
From each nnd all the answer wns i
practically the same:
"This work appears to me a sort ,
of heavenly berth
After my experience in that print
nhop down on earth.'
Put I noted two were missing. I
searched for them in vuin,
And then, turning to my guide, I
asked him to explain.
"What about Ruhl nnd Smith?
Why are they not here?
Couldn't they o'ercomo tho grade?
Weren't their machines in gear?"
"Oh, Hinith." replied my escort,
"he started like a hare.
But stopped to arguo politics and
still I floating in the air.
Buhl, sinco the late election.
thought the world had gone to
hell
So ho anchored at the moon, there
for a while to dwell.''
"Well," said the genii at last, "I

In the micro-movie the embryo

All this time, the blood is bciliR

After about 38 hours it siRtlnl rocs

An 83,000 word literary bomb
shell has been hurled upon the
long expectant world by G. W.
Wickershanrs prohibition enforce
ment Investigating committee,
i After n study covering a period
of 23 months the commission re
ports sonic very definite opinions
tin the subject. It is noticeable,
however, that there was no real
unity of opinion among the mem
bers of the commission. This fact
is not surprlsliiR for there Is no
national unity of thinking on this
subject. As n matter of fact tho
I report reveals the fact that tho
membership of the commission
was well selected, for Its report is
in no senso partisan.
Two paragraphs In the summary
of the report are of particular sig
330 I lllflcance, partly because they were
points on which all of the mem
bers agreed and partly because
they nre poignant comment on the
situation:
"The commission Is ot tho opin
ion that there Is yet no adequate
observanco or enforcement."
"Tho commission Is ot tho opin
ion that the present organization
for enforcement is still Inade
quate." Another Important recommenda
tion was that congress be given
the power to regulate or prohibit
the liquor business. This was of
fered as a BiiRRestlon In case tho
3 8th" amendment were ever re
vised. (Roseburg News-Review.)
