of Queen KiizaneXh. in the ItitU
century. Ycu could buy grain in
J-rfVerpool an cheaply as Drake
bought it when he was provision
his hfa ships to vob the Spuniai'ds.
The 'Chicago price was better here,
thanks to tlncle Sam's long pocket
book, stabilizing prices by buying
and hot gulling, and thanks to the
tariff.
William Rogers knows President
Hoover us well as Milton knew
Cromwell. You remember bow
powerfully Milton used to express
Cromwell's thought and purpose,
usually in Latin. Yesterday, Itog-
I eis revealed Mr. Hoover's unwil-1
lingness to hand twenty-live mil
lions of public money to the Ited
Cross, to be used in national relief.
Today you read that the Senate, in
rather tricky fashion, voted for the
$25,00p,0UU . Ited Cross appropria
tion. The President, as . a . matter of
course, will veto" that. - foolishness,
if it ever comes before him. When
this government decided to build
the Panama Canal it did not give
and say: "You build it." Why bur
den the Red Cross with drought
and unemployment relief which is
much too big a job to say nothing
pf overhead wastage? Private phi-
lsint hrnnic ni'eiiciPH v1h the hunt nf
intentions are expensive.
If you gave $25,00(1,000 for relief
to the Hod Cross and it passed the
money on to the Salvation Army,
and it in turn to the Y. At. C. A.,
and it to any one of the other he-1
nevolent agencies, when it came to
paying out the money, after over
head, salaries, expenses, etc., there
would be about enough left to buy
three sandwiches.
A congressional committee Inves
tigating communism and commun-!
ists, reports that those gentlemen
and their theories are a grave men
ace lo democratic government. The
first natural question is WHAT
HKMOCHATIC government? Wliere
have the committee seen such a
government ? Communism means
having things in common, "divid
ing up." Outside of the Hible, read !
on Sunday, you "near little about1
dividing. In our civilization and I
from those that have anything lo
divide, you henr nothing about di
viding. f-f
If we ever get a democratic gov
ernment, and it ever faces a "grave
menace, " it will come from gentle
men seeking to grab everything,
not from would-be dividers. If
Congress can take care of the grab
bers, at .Muscle Shoals, for in
f,tau'e, it need not worry about
communistic dividers. They will
change their minds as soon as they
get something to divide.
'i'he cotnmiltee says the "reds"
are elosely united and obey the
orders of Mosr.ow absolutely.
Thut is as foolish as whnl the
reds say of cnpitalisni, and even
more inneruraie. Where ten com
inunistH are gathered together there
are ten distinet ami separate plans
for governing the world. And no
real communist believes in taking
orders from nnyborty. Look at.
Trotxky thrown out by Stalin, Dan
ton beheaded Uy Kobespierre. Uo
hesi'.eire guillotined, Mai at, slab
bed to death by Charlotte Corday.
Congress should watch the gr:ih-1
hers and let the comic artists at- j
tend to the communists. j
