To Ambitious Boosters for Southern Oregon Development:
Will Medford ever grow up, put off its childish ways anil become ii
city 1n fact ns well as in name?' Mccuuse nf the narrow-mindedness of a
certain group of its prominent (?) citizens. iMedford in losing out ns n
center of one of the largest mining development projects ever put over
on the West Coast.
A few months ago as General Manager of the Kormite Metals Cor
poration, Ltd., I came Into your city to lay plans and tako the Initial
steps in this larger project which necessarily had to he kept more or
less quiet. This aroused tho curiosity, comment and sarcasm or vari
ous Medfordites ond resulted In considerable talk by some of the citi
zens who have done their utmost to ascertain exactly what Is going
forward. Two of the so-called prominent citizens have culled upon me
and expressed their willingness to oo-operate financially PROVIDING
I would lay nil our cards on Ihe table and let them know who we were,
why we were here, and what we were going to do.
Shortly niter coming to your city I called upon an official of Ihe
California Oregon Power Company for a power rate for running our
proposed electric smelter but was given to understand thut the Copco
knew nothing of electric furnuco operation and could give no rate until
they bad made investigation of various types of furnaces which in
itself seemed ridiculous as public utility corporations ure supposedly In
the market to furnish power. Alter some months of hesitation, the
Copco olficial finally quoted nn exorbitant rate the highest rale for
electric furnace operation in the mited States. Finances were in hand
for the operation of this smelter hut, due to this lack of co-operation
by the public utility concern, it was deemed wise to at leas! dolay this
purl of the project.
A six-story Class A office and sloro building of which all Soulhern
Oregon might well be proud was also pluiined for Medford. Mr. (iilllln
and Mr. Ferguson hud culled on a lurge number nf business and pro
fessional men in regard to future tenancy and having boon told Ihe
approximate rentals, expressed their eagerness to take space therein.
After arranging the financing, drawing (he plans and expending some
five thousand dollars In preliminary expenses, letters were written, for
the protection of myself nnd associates, lo some twenty of those who
had expressed their desire for space bill only one of iheso Idlers re
ceived even the courtesy of a reply. This one reply stated lliat I lie
writer would bo Interested If the renlal was brought down lo the figure
now paid in nn nntiiitialed nnd dilapidated building where we under
stand he Is now occupying several offices at a total monthly rental of
fifty dollars. Naturally with Ihis lack of co-operation und Interest,
Medford lost (he building which would have been a great ussei to Hie
city.
Recently, business has so urgently called in a up and down Ihe cons,
drawing togclher various phases of the larger projects that I have only
been In my office throe days during the past month nnd havo been un
able to care lor many small mailers. This hus, however, served lo show
me how small-calibre ure some at least of the Medford business men
and how impossible It was going to he for me und my associates lo
center our larger project In Medford us we had anticipated.
I have met nothing but criticism, opposition and antagonism from
Medford business men culminating yesterday In nn nttuchnicnl put on
the office (luring my absence by liarwood, the prologinpher, lo protect
the large sum of fVi.W which was owing him! (In passing. II might
i... noted that some mouths ngo a new employee of mine cashed bogus
checks to the iimounl ol several hundred dollars among Medford mer
chants and 1. though under no obligation cither legal or moral to do so,
reimbursed them bocuuso I had come lo Medford to make It my home
and wanted to he more than lair In all my dealings wnn lis citizens.
And among these was a check for $10 to .Mr. Ilurwood! "Nough said. "I
The nngentleinanly treatment regularly accorded me Is further evi
denced bv the attitude of .Medford's ox-mayor toward one of my m:inug
ir,,r n.gn,'.imm n man of lilch standing In Washington, llecaiise Mr.
Ward refused to divulge to Ihe cm-mayor Just who he was nnd his bnsl
ness. the ex-mayor told him he was an undesirable tenant and threat
ened to throw him out of Ihe building.
These nre but a few ol the unnecessary handicaps under which !
and my associates nnd engineers have been struggling In trying to bring
the enormous prngrum which is under way with lis major financing
completed, to Medford as its terminal and heart.
It therefore becomes evident that Modford does not want lo he.
and will not lie, raised out of Ihe "small-town' narrow guage class s"
our program will be centered elsewhere and neither I. nor 1 through
niy associates, will spend another red cent In Ihls tAwn. Wlthhi a tew
years Medford nnd Mcdlordltes will realize how much I hey luive lost
snd how seriously they have handicapped Ihe city and retarded Its fu
tm o by their childish penny-ante stuff.
