"I've turned the time backward
this evening," announced the Little
Dlack Clock.
The children were never wor
ried that his magic
would give out.
They knew how
he had been given
plenty to last him
for all the adven
tures he wanted to
take, and he had
promised them
that they could al-:,a8C
ways go on his i

him.
The Little Black
Clock had been so
wise and so full ofK'
spirit to choose the wiiv he had.
How often they spoke of that time
when the Little Dlaci; t lock had
told them he had been given the
choice of keeping the regular,
ordinary time, or being able to
turn the time backward or forward
as he wished.
Ami never, never did they feel
tired or sleepy because of these
adventures. He always knew how
to give them extra hours for sleep.
Just as he had spoken the chil
dren saw, at the end of a nearby
street, a horse running for nit he
was worth. He was pulling a
wagon after him, hut no one was
in it.
"Runaway horse! Runaway
horse! Runaway!" shouted the
people who' appeared from every
where, while the horse galloped

J tho people. I'arents pulled their
I children Indoors. It seemed that
I the horse might at any moment
dash on the sidewalk.
And then along the street, com
ing toward the noise, was a police
man, waving his arms in the direc
tion of the horse. People gasped.
They felt the policeman would be
crushed.
But he had jumped up and
caught the bridle and now he was
talking gently to the horse, sooth
ing him, quieting him.
"It was because of that automo
bile," the Little Dlack Clock said.
"that the horse became fright
ened." And John and Peggy laughed. It
was certainly some lime since an
automobile had frightened a
horse!

The typical modern household
comprises only a father and moth-
;er and one or two children. The
I emotional relationship within this
email mutually dopoVident Broup
must necessarily he hiRhly charged.
Every fault of character and ad
justment In tho adult has there-
fore an enormous power to affect
the child. The artificially restrict
ed social life of the city child nar-
rows the number nnd kinds of con
tacts which could ho counted on to
offset ' difficulties of personality
which may develop In tho home
j atmosphere.
The modern adolescent further
more is lieset with confusion on
every hand. There Is not, as
j among primitive people, one set of
rules, one type of hehavlor from
which It Is unthinkable that he ns
an Individual should differ, but n.
thousand Riving rise In his mind
to endless cthica.1. religious and
emotional conflicts.
j Tho whole cultural heritage of
his s.iciety, the infinite number of
j conflict, nnd unsolved problem
which tt carries, all impinge upon
his consciousness with a special
1 pressure at n time when he Is al
ready under the strain of strug
gling with such basic problems as
the necessity of leaving home, or
of deriding upon a means of self-
I support.
It is no wonder then that the
ndolsecnt of today often Indulges
( in .behavior which seems rather
more wild nnd fantastic than that
of any generation that hns gone
before.
We ns adulis are frequently con
futed enough by the difficulty nt
arriving nt lasting values nnd ff'.R
nlficant standards of conduct In .1
world which changes so vastly
from year to year.
Surely, the mistakes nnd falw
starts of our boys and girls de
serve to be met with nil tho tol
erance, sympathy and wisdom we
have tit om. command.
