REtVIITi FOR SEALS,
CHAIRMAN'S PLEA
the game of basketball.
It was my pleasure to teach his
sport to college coaches in n Hpec-
lal coaching school nt Springfield
( Mass.) college, on the grounds
where 40 years ago he originated
the Indoor game.
The experience had deep signifi
cance for one basketball coach at
least. Of course the peach bas

today. ' Nalsmlth'a original Idea
was to make basketball a mass
game with great groups playing
it; Instead of that the game has
developed Into a most intricate five
man learn game with millions of
teams playing. Liasketball I the
only national and international
game that has come from the mind
of a single man.
I found myself teaching the sport
with a new zest. Constantly I was
reminded of the activities of-the
sturdy young Scot, then a student,
being requested by Luther H. Ciu
lick, his advisor, to work out a
game to harness the activities of ,
a eta.ss of IS 'Irrepressible physical
education students.
Tho class needed something to
do during the inclement winter
months between the football and
baseball seasons.
The first' rule printed In
in the "Triangle" required that
nine men be on each team. Had
Nuismlth'rt class numbered 2 1 In
st pad of IH, perhaps the basket
ball rules would have required 1
men instead of nine. The Job as
signed him was to originate a game
It would bo a fitting tribute to
Nafsmith, the inventor, If the col
leges and schools of America would
fix a small voluntary game-tax
tlie proceeds to be used as was the
Walter Camp memorial fund.
A Nafsmith memorial would be a
living testimonial to tlie man who
gave to youth a game "protesting
the fallacy tliit the world is old."
Two choice location.1 for such a
national memorial come to mind.
The Springfield campus overlook
ing historic Lake Massasuolt would
be' an ideal location. On the other
hand, beautiful Mt. Oread, the
campus of the Cniversity of Kan
sas could lay claim to the honor.
It is here that .Dr. Naismlth has
served the department of physical
education for 33 years, giving the
basketball world the best In the
way of teaching, devotion nnd in
