the association, opened the meet
ing with all singing "America."
This was followed by the Flag
Salute.
During the business session the
president read a petition for "Free
Text Hooks in the Schools," copies
of which will be presented to each
of our three members of the
legislature. This petition received
the signatures of practically every
one present confirming the posi
tion (f all parents and teachers on
tho question.
Several delegates were named to
attend tho County Council of Parent-Teachers

Central Point.

During the social hour four of

Named for New Year
New officers for the year were
elected by t he M cd ford G a rden
club at the regular meeting on
Thursday evening, January K. Mrs.
Fred Cummings was elected pres
ident, Mrs. L. 13. Williams vice
president. Mr. C. C. Darby secre
tary and Mrs. 13. M. Wilson, treas
urer. Mrs. Cummings has been nn In
terested wnd active member and
the club is fortunate In her ac
ceptance of the office of president.
Mrs. Riddle of Grant Pass was
present with some pictures of the
garden of Mrs. Thomas Kerr and
of other Portland gardi ns. Mr.
Cope kindly consented to bring a
lantern from the school and the
pictures which were beautiful, were
shown. '
Much credit Is due the retiring
president. Mrs. Leland A. Mentzer,
for her untiring effort In the ac
complishment of the . various .ac
tivities of the cluh during the past
year.
A number of attractive flower
shows have been held throughout
the year and the flower exhibit at
the county fair was arranged and
cared for by Garden club mem
he rs.
The exhibit from MeVlford which
won first place In Its class at the
Portland Rose show, was sent
through the efforts of and at tho
expense of the club.
A garden contest among school
children was managed by the club
with a gratifying show of Interest
among the young contestants.
Excellent lectures given hy au
thorities on vnrious subjects have
been given under the auspices of
the club nnd free to the general
public,
The club has also uunn request
cooperated with other civic organ

Rowring Monday evening.
Miss Lucy Davis, chairman of
the committee, presided and a
pleasant social time with refresh
ments was enjoyed following the
completion of business.
