NEW YORK, Jan. :. (Special)
The electric light and power com
panies, it is eittimated, wit ex
Hpeml $700,000,000 duriiiR lol for
now construction, extension and
betterment of facilities, nccortliiiK
to a staement by Paul S. Clapp,
niamtKiiiK director of the Xutlonul
f Klectric lAy;hl association. "This
figure is based on telegraphic in
fo in niton from electric light and
power companies in all sections ot
the country," he stated.
"Budgets are now under prepa
ration. Factors affecting expendi
tures will be resumption of indus
trial power demand, the general
investment haying of securities and
the assurance of a sufficient return
upon the investment to attract
requisite capital.
"During the past year JSHO.OOO,
000 was expended by the electric
light and power companies for new
construction, extension and better
ment of facilities. Thin compares
with $7n;:.0(io,OHO during li-2S and
$K!i3.000.000 In The expendi
tures last year were approximately
70 per cent for transmission and
distribution facilities and :t0 per
cent for power houses. This con
struction program involved large
expenditures for both labor and
materials and spread generally
f throughout the country so that al
most every locality benefited. Al
though construction programs were
accelerated to sustain employment
they were carried out as part of a
carefully engineered, long-range de
velopment program."

Sparkling in its coniedv and fi!l-j
ed with the personality of Marilyn I
Miller, ".sunny." the Kirst National;
and Vitaphone version of the staue
play, opened yesterday at the Holly
theater. From the lines of Mari
lyn Miller fans at the box of f iee
there seems to be but little douht
that this picture will be an even
greater suecess than "Sally."
" Sunny" U something distinct as
a picture type. It follows no con
ventional lines. Taken from M is
M iller's famous stage success,
which ran for throe years, "Sunny"
on the tatkinii-screen L essentia Hy
a comedy - romance. It is built '

Miller, who as the hc.ivhael; rider

is loved by all. but lo'ves Tom j
I, iwrenee Gray whom shf has met ,
in past years. He is in society and
is jilsl sailing from Southampton;
with h:.s fiancee. j
The story then moves on. in a
d.-Hghtfu! manner that is half seri-:
ous and half tomfoolery, to a
transatlantic liner. "Sunny" .smug
gles herself aboard by mistake..
One of the highly entertaining se
ll uen res i.s the dock scene, where I
Miss Miller ifi in overalls and isj
mistaken for-a stevedore. It is Hi
fine bit of clowning, and proves
the star to he a comedienne of the
first water. .
The picture introduces to the
public a new screen name, that of
Joe Donahue, brother of the fam
ous .Jack. Joe is as Irish as his
name implies. He. of course, fcoes
to America on the same liner as
j does O. P. 'Hcptiie,- 'SunnyV ras
I cally father and ma miner of the
; circus. Joe, .warries Marilyn just
, to. oblige her and to help her net
! into the Tufted States. Joe is a
splendid dancer, and makes a very
able partner for Miss Miller in a
couple ot tap nances nno an ananoi.
The music of the picture is by
Jerome Kern, America's foremost
j master of this kind of music. Sev
eral new pieces appear winch were
written especially for the Hereon
version, and were not in the staye
production.
Tho picture is splendidly cast
throughout. Inez Co iiitiicy, a
Itroadwav favorite, nives a Hp Ion -
