Wheat Turned Into Pork
Brings Premium in Kan
sas City Market Porkers
Feed to Taste.
r t
BEATRICE, Neb. (P) A drov&
of "cafeteria fed" hogs raised near
here offers proof that wheat may
be turned into pork at a profit.
On a lieatrice farm, operated
by C. J. Clausen, head of an
Omaha company, 700 Hampshire
hofis were fed a wheat ration
which resulted In weight: gnlns,
estimated to have made the wheat
worth $1.13 a bushel, n com
pared with an average Nebraska
farm price of 63 to 67 cents.
When the hogs were sold, the
purchaser paid ii cents above the
Kansas City market price.
In feeding the hogs "cafeteria
style, the largest of the nelt
feeder.4 scattered over the lots con
tained coarsely cracked wheat;
smaller one contained cracked
barley, and fit III smaller one
contained shelled corn.
, The end of the latter" was par
titioned for a protein tankage. As
a result of tho feeding method,
Claasen says, the hogs ate prin
cipally wheat nnd only .a very
small proportion of barley, corn
and tankage.
It would certainly be tough for
