A famous bacteriological uuthor -
Ity riiimed Flugge showed the Im

U a c t e rlologists

Another good nuthorlty, Wins

J state's prisoners should be turned
over to medical science for - ex
perimental' use but I think It Is
perfectly logical and safe to .as
sume that, yo long as one can con
trive to keep more than four feet
from the face of one's vis-a-vis.
on( Is not likely to catch watever ; n matter how reluctant they ap
the vls-a-vis may happen to haveiPeared make them kiss her in re-
in the way of a respiratory In
fectlon.
Many tests by other bacteriol
ogists have fairly well shown that
tho droplets of moisture given off
from nose and mouth In the form
of visible or Jnvislhlly fine spray
when one coughs will carry 10 to
12 feet. The rango of the spray
in sneezing is the same. In talk
lng the range is lowered to four
feet or less.
Everybody understands that kiss
lng on tho- mouth is a very likely
way to contract any communicable
disease which is communicable
through the nose, throat or mouth
secretions. The next best 'way Is
to conduct a Weber and Fields
chat with the person who has tho
disease or Is perhaps Just coming
down with It. Younger readers
may not know what Weber and
Fields means. Old-timers will re
call how the two famous come
dians carried on their endless ar
guments, at such close quarters
that they frequently had to wipe
an eye and beg one another not
to splash so.
These days the Individual who
perpetrates a sneeze or a cough
without first carefully covering his
nose nnd mouth Is likely to be
thrown out of the shop, hnll or
conveyance on his neck. Put con
versational spray is still good tform
and you have to tako your chances
in It. Uemember It, carries less
than five feet.

When Louise and Mildred were
little girls their gay and charming
mother used to descend upon the
nursery where they spent most of
their days in charge of a nurse, to
pay them a dally visit before she
went out for the evening.
At these moments she would
take the children Into her arms
and ask them If they loved their
mother. She would kiss them and
turn.
Grown women now, these two
remember their mother as an en
tertaining and delightful woman,
but a person also toward whom
1 tney fet nt- only little affection
but a positive physical repulsion.
They had never kissed her ex
cept when she commanded them
to, and they had done It only be
cause they were afraid to disobey.
The love of children for father
and mother ennnot be commanded.
It must be earned through treat
ment which gives the child a feel
ing of security, confidence and
companionship In the presence of
Its parents.
It Is quite as hurtful to the child
to force him to be demonstrative
as to treat him so coldly that his
own Impulses to show affection do
not dare assert themselves.
Children aro wise. They -know
without thinking about It thnt the
parent who makes a point of de
manding from them the evidences
of affection is somewhere lacking
In the quality of his love and they
quite properly resent his advances.
Such demonstrations represent
In the parent both a compensation
for the Inadequacy of his own love
for his children and a possessive
egotistical attitude thnt would ex
ploit their developing emotions.

SANTA'S VISITS
By Mary (irnlitinl litimu'i
Ah Suntii CIhuh was flnlnltlny toy
after toy he talked to John nntl
1'ewy about vlHlts he made to dif
ferent countries.
"in Austria and other parts of
Kurope, ' he said.
"they put cnndles
In the windows
of their homes,
and you .know
how In your own
country so many
cities and vll
lagei have
Christmas trees
in pnrks nnd In
public squares
IlKhted around
Christmns time.
"How I do en
Joy seeing them
as I make my rounds. They look
so full of twinkling merriment of
this wonderful season."
"We're going to hnve a tree all
ready for you to trim," John told
Santa Claus.
"That'B splendid!" ho exclnimod.
"Now when I visit Armenia and
Greece and Syria I have discovered
that they llko to eat lamb for
Christmas just ns you like to eat
turkey with a fine stuffing mnde
or ooiipn rice and raisins nnd pine
seeds. In Germany they love- roast
goose for their Christmas dinner."
"I like turkey meat," salil John.
"So do I," agreed IVggy.
"I think I do loo," Santa Chins
ndmitted.
"Now when I go to Nova Scotia"
he continued, "there Is a town to
which the Indians come from their
settlement nearby. They bring In
Christmns trees in their ox-drawn
wagons, and oh, how lovely Is the
smell of the fir trees and the salty
smell from the sea thnt Is along
the coast! The Indlnns mako such
gay bnskcts and bend necklaces
too.''
What a Jolly pce this was
where Santa lived and worked.
And when Santa was not talk
ing he was laughing and singing.
He wns working all the time.
"Whether they hang great old
heavy mm-klnus mnde of thick grey
yarn as they used to do when your
country wns very, very new,"
Santa said, "or the kinds they hang
now makes no difference to Santa!
I fill them all!"
