duction costa in Oregon have juHt
been mado by the Oregon experi
ment station covering dairy pro
duett), which tend to emphasize
the wide difference in results ob
tained by farmers under varying
conditions and methods within one
state. .
The data gathered are from ac-
4 tual surveys made by personal con
tact with hundreds of dairymen in
all principal regions of the state
for these industries. They were
1 made by specialists of the farm
management department working
' under the provisions of the l'urnell
hilt which provides federal funds
for such economic investigations.
Cost 26 Cents in 1920
The average cash cost of pro
ducing butterfat in Oregon in 1929
was 26 cents a pound, and the to
tal Including such non-cash costs
qs Interest on investment, family
lu bo r and home grown feed,
' reached the surprising total of 50
cents a pound. These were the ave
rage figures based on the produc
tion of mora than 2,000,000 pounds
of butterfat from 8734 cows on

furms.
Costs for930, it is pointed out,
are somewhat lower as. the result
of lower feed prices, which effect
will be brought out in a continu
ation of the study another year on
the same farms. With the present
price of butterfat around 30 cents
a pound, an unsatisfactory return
to the average dairyman is ap
parent, the specialists point out.
Few Hold Cost Down
Only five per cent of the dairies
studied kept the total costs below
30 cents, and 17 per cent kept
them below 40 cents. Ten per cent,
on the other hand, had costs above
70 cents. High producing cows and
cheap feed were the factors tend
ing to keep production costs down.
Lowest production costs thus far
were found in the Irrigated alfalfa
sections of eastern and southern
Oregon. In these regions tho ave
rage costs were 43 centB as com
pared with 4H cents for the coast
regions and 65 eentB for the Wil
lamette valley. Lack of summer
pastures is the .chief cause of high
.costs' in the Willamette , valley,
while high investment tended to
raise costs on tho coast, though
higher market, returns there offset
this disadvantage, the report
staes. . ,

high producing cows were invar
iably reflected In lower butterfat
costs, tho survey shows..

000 postal employes.
Tho bill, sent to the senate,
grants a Saturday half holiday
to postoffice employes.
Provision is made that if ser
vice requires employment on Sat

shall be given compensatory time
the following week.
