Government statistics indicate
that tho average wholesale price
for all commodities in the low
est since the spring of lUlti.
Six months ago tho average ro
tail price for these commodities
was the lowest since December,
1!H7. . figures on retail prices wilt
not bo computed again until Feb
ruary, but statist iciuns of the la
bor department point out that the
trend has been downward since
lust summer.
Using 100 as the index number
for prices prevailing in 1526. the
wholesale price of all commodities
dropped to 82. ti In October this,
year.
Figured another way. the 19-6
dollar had a purchasing power of
$1.21 a few weeks ago. In Octo
ber, 1929, tho rtime dollar would
buy only $1.03 worth of goods.
Food, men and women's cloth
ing, household furnishings, fuel
and lighting ujist less. Surveys
made by business bureaus in some
of the larger cities show a drop
of as much as 20 per cent in re
tail prices since 1929.
The reduction in dresses Is re
ported us ranging from 10 to 30
per cent, of fur coats from 50 to
40 per cent, of shoes from 8 to
23 per cent and of hosiery from
1G to 30 per cent.
Men's eults and overcoats were
said to have dropped in price
from 9 to 20 per cent.
Poultry, beef, pork, lamb, pota
toes, fresh fruits, coffee, sugar,
butter und eggs rango from 3 to
33 per cent cheaper.
Government statisticians say that
while retail prices of commodi
ties cannot be forecast accurately,
the prospect Is that living costs
will remain low throughout tho
winter.
