A recent Sunday supplement feature in tins weekly on mor
als of the American nirl, adopts the credo that the American
(,'irl has no morals, and then proceeds to establish this point'li.v

facts in this' feature are true that is, if they are TYI'ICAIj of
American life then the ipmlities which for centuries have been
accepted as the mark of ladies anil (,'entlenjon, no longer exist.
T
WK can't believe they are true. If we rememlier correctly,
it was Voltaire who slated that if there were (iod, Man
would create one. For the same reason if there were no moral
code, society would create such a (joi'le for human conduct.
Old standards have miipiestionahly lieen abandoned. New
standards have not as yet been sufficiently crystallized lo tak'?
their place. Mntthis period of suspended animation in a moral
sense is, we are sure, merely a passing phase.
A new moral code will eventually take the place of the older
one, and probably prove a belter one, because it will be better
suited to modern conditions, particularly to the so-called equal
ity of the sexes.
Tiri.S will happen not because morals arc good I'KR SK, but
because if what we call civilization is to endure they nr.?
XKCKSSA.HV. Self preservation is still the strongest instinct
in the human animal. And what, we call being "moral" is mere
ly being wise avoiding the habits that nol only destroy happi
ness but, in the end, mean physical and spirilual death.
By taking advantage of this passing phase Uhcry undoubl
edly is making hay while the sun shines, but its heydey will
pass, just as surely as the condition which created it. There is
a force of moral gravity, just as there is of physical gracity. And
while it may be overcome for a time, anil perhaps eluded here
and there, it always wins in the end.
