Jack's mother was saying to him

Mr. Vaneerlng escorted Dagger

made no reference to his wife's de

Dagger was unobtrusively affection

Dagger? Thank you." He stooped
to kiss her. "You are a treat. I
am going to enjoy ou."
"Please do," was all she could
say for acknowledgment.
For , she was frightened. What
had happened between Jack and his
mother? What would happen?
Jack was lounging in a big easy
chair, a cigarette In his mouth. He
rose at once, and made a deter
mined Jffort to erase the shadow
which bung over his features.
"Ah, sport!" be greeted her.
"What luck?"
She tossed a handful of checks to
him, without comment. He whis
tled, riffling thorugh them
"About a thousand, eb? And I
suppose the chumps thougbt they
would show the little girl from Tex
as some high life!" He took her
hands, his eyes scrutinizing her
with a mixture of adoration and
concern. "Suy " he gulped "you
and mother haven't hit It off. have
you?"
Dagger choked her first indignant
afUrmntlon of the question with an
effort. A still voice deep iu ner
brain whispered that this man was
ber husband, who, In Iosb than
twenty-four hours, would have left
her for the caldron of the war.
Any humiliation or dlBcouitort she
suffered wouldn't be too steep a
price to pay. If it made his going
easier.
"I know, dear." She nodded wise
ly. "And you mustn't worry. vVeil
get along perfectly Jufl as soon as
we know each other. And your fa
ther and Kitty like me, already."
"They're wild about you. And
so will mother be, after she's recon
ciled to the situation. She can't
help loving you nobody could."
And he swept her bodily off her
feet In an embrace that shook ber
with ecstasy.
"Only tonight and tomorrow," he
panted. "Oh. Dagger! So short a
time. Love me, doarest, love mt."
"I love you with all my heart,"
ahe murmured.
But when she closed her eyes it
wasn't Juck'B face that swam mlstl

Later, lying awake betide her
sleeping husband, she conned the

The days passed quicker than
Dagger hud expected. If her moth.

Mr. Vaneerlng was at pains to be
attentive, and Kitty gave her Com
panionship and saw to It that she
met people and had sufficient en
tertainment.
But the bulk of the people she
met had nothing in common with
her.
Always, too. she had Jack upon
her mind. The night Mr. Vaneer
lng haa -knocked upon her door,
unwontedly excited "Allx. Allx!
Washington Just called mo. Jack's
convoy is safe." she bad buried her
face in her pillow, biting the linen
to restrain the sous that siruggiea
for utterance.
Jack went to the Front; he was
assigned to a Pursuit Group down
came the curtain!
St. Mihlel. and a brief announce
ment from Flrut Army Headquar
ters: "In combat over the enemy
lines, Captain John Vaneerlng, D.
F.U., D.S.C shot down bis tenth
plane." Next a lettor from Jack
he'd received the Legion of Honor
and a Belgian decoration Mure
weeks of strain. The Argonne. .
second communique, terse and mat
ter-of-fact: "Captain John Vaneer
Ing yesterday and the day before
shot down In flames his .eleventh
and twelfth enemy planes. Today
he destroyed an enemy observation
balloon over Mont Sec."
Like every other American, Dag
ger was swept off her feet by the
rush of events that Fall, (he stesdy
thrusts of the Allied Armies, which
were chopping the German resist
ance apart.
Indeed, as the tide of victory
swelled, and the dally communiques
increased the totals or prisoner?
and guns taken and ground gained,
she became superstitious about her
own Investment In the titanic
melee. With so many men dying,
with millions grappling In a death
battle from the Alps to the Channel
const, with the skies constantly fill
of buzzing, man-driven killer-wasps,
what right had she to expect espe
cial safety fo. her Jack? And she
wasn't surprised when doom struck,
a telegram from the Red Cross:
"Captain John Vaneerlng Is In
Neuilly Hospital with shattered
kneecap."
What a day that was In the Van
oerlug household! Telephones Jang
ling, telegraph messengers coming
and going In a steady stream. Mr
Vaneerlng pulled every wire he
could reach, and the next morning
brought a cable from Jack, himself
"Don't worry. Knee troublesotm
but safe. Nice bllghty." At least
ns Kitty pointed out. Jack was sad
now rrom worse harm. And thai
wns something to he thankful for.
But an Inevltuhle reaction Dag
ger experienced from this Incldem
was to lose most of her Inlorest It
