Italian Flag Anti-French
Seed Sown Among War-

significance attaches to a tour of
the Inland of Corsica, birthplace of
Napoleon, just made by the Italian
Automobile club.
For a growing agitation is aris
ing In Italy crying that Corsica is
Italian historically and ethnologic
ally, and must return to Italy,
whether by treaty or by war.
Corsica, Nice and Tunis would
be in immediate dispute between
France and Italy if war, always
urged by certain sections of both
nations, develops. And the pros
pect of gaining or losing these
three possessions might well bring
on a war.
Italians Still.
The Italian Automobile club
members reported on their return
to Italy, that the Corsicans were
Htill Italians in habits, speech and
joint of view, but that the men,
Iking Corsicans and therefore war
like, were flocking Into the French
army In hopes of military prefer
ment. The newspapers of Italy have not
been permlttod to comment on the
political aide of the tour, in which
scores of automobiles took part.
But there is little popular doubt
that Its organizers intended to con
vince the Corsicaiw, by means of
the excursion, that Italians still
had them in mind and would come
to their assistance In time of trou
ble, i
Book Offers Proof.
At this moment of writing, a
book has been published in Rome
by Iho Italian publicist Nino D'
Aroma, called "Corsica Land, of
Italy!"'' In U'DAroma' seeks to
provo that the Island should belong
to Italy.
Corsica, third Island of the Med
iterranean In lsse, coming immedi
ately after Sicily and Sardlana, is
of great strategic importance to
whichever of the two countries
possesses It. For France it would
serve beautifully for bases from
which to attack a vital section of
the Italian cout. This section In
cludes tlenoa, busiest port in the
Mediterranean; Kpczla, with lm
uoiHant shipbuilding and naval
yards; Leghorn, also important as
Mhipbuilrilng center; picturesque
little i'lsa, Oretello and Grosneto.
Strategic; location.
Just off the coast is the island
of Elba, Napoleon' place of exile,
now owned by .Italy. Rome itself
Is only 150 miles away. And Just
south of Corsica is the Italian isl
and of Sardinia, from which the
Italian king derived their title.
In the Italo-Turkish war of 1912,
when friction between France and
Italy arose over Italy's seizure of
some French ships, France massed
troops and warships in Corsica,
and then Intimated to Italy that
who would proceed to overrun Sar
dinia from Corsica. The ship seiz
ures stopped.
