Air transport companies who de

from the carrying of passengers
without tho aid of Income from
the hauling of air mail and ex

cial failure, declared Earl B. Wads
worth, superintendent of air mail
services, in discussing the recent
upward revision of passenger car
rying rates by two operators.
Single motored ships, having a
capacity of not more than six pas

''can's' possibly operate" for rz
cents a mile, the amount of pas
senger, revenue on the 7-cents-per-mile
bawls to which some air
transport operators have increased
their fares. He declared the same
resultant loss applied to the oper
ation of three motored planes hav
ing a capacity of 10 to 14 pasnen
gers, where the maximum aver
age load would probaby be. ten
or lose, while information secured
from air mall operators indicated
1 the minimum figure for operating
a tri-motored airplane Is more than
Jl a mite.
"They've got to carry more than
one kind of pay load,' the air mall
superintendent declared. "There is
no form of transportation exce-pt
buses and street cars that can run

A similar oihihuii ws uascu
Riiant noetmaster general, who
stated that the. postoffice depart

mail operators develop passenger
carrying business. ;
Mr. Glovor added:
"The ambition of the postoffice
department Is to have- all mail
operators carry passengers. We'd
like to have them carry passengers
at night, but we're not urging that."
Successful operators, according;
to Mr. Wadsworth, will attempt to
meet expenses with the revenue
from one farm of pay load and
make their profit on the second
type of cargo.
According to the latest depart

there arc 30 lines in "the passenger
carrying business exclusively, while
