temporarily abandoned by the lo
ral chapter of the -Volunteers of
America, Co. Jessie F. Btarks. who
-is in Medford from Portland, an
nounced today, following a thor

ficer. Oases will be taken to the
home In Portland for care with
the exception of emergency cases,
which will bo handled at local
headquarters.
This change In program plans.
Col. S'arka stated today, has been
necessitated by the general busi
ness depression which is felt
throughout the nation. The or
ganization feels that It would be
impossible to raise funds to finance
the home here at the present time
The Volunteers will carry on ex
tensive charity work here at Christ
mns time and will care for home
less children through the Portland
office. All cases will be reported
to the officer nt local headqunr
ters. who will in turn report them
to Portland. The local chapter
plans to cooperate with all existing
clubs and charitable organizations
Iv avoiding duplication of work,
Col. Stnrks pointed out. Speaking
for the organization, she expressed
appreciation of the support so far
given the workers and the general
attitude of the Medford people ex
tended toward the projects under
. taken here.
The local officer will collect
clothing for distribution to fam

"There's a madhouse a bit on

said. "And farther out Is Eddy

"What's that?" she asked.
"A privato flying-field. Eddy's

to you. 1 mean, If he thinks you're
safe to teach, he'll do it for me,
although very tew women have
learned to fly as yet."
"1 don't know why not," Dagger
asserted cockily. "I guess women
can do anything men can.
"I'm betting you can," Vaneerlng
rallied, with an open look ot ail
miration. His hand strayed as by
accident over hers, where It rested
on tho steering wheel. "You're, a
very wonderful girl, Dnggor.'
"And 1 don't hold hands," she
snapped.
"Quite right, he answered cor
dially. "Too early for that sort of
thing."
They bad a friendly breakfast to
gether and afterwards drovo up
the road to a much smaller flying
field than Kelly.
A young man came forward at
sight ot Vanoering, glancing curi
ously at Dagger.
"This Is Eddy Stedman," Vnneer-
ing Introduced him. "My frlond,
Miss Mnrley. Eddy. She wants to
fly"
"Yes?" lie drawled. "I've done a
heap of things In this game, but I
don't ordinarily contract to tench
women, Miss Marley."
"I'm sure I could learn," Dagger
.iiswarud, hating herself for the
Hlilteil engernoss she was unnble
to avoid.
"I'd take It as a particular favor,
Eddy," put In Vaneerlng. "Miss
Marley has the stuff In her, I be
lieve. If she can make good, she
might be useful for exhibition fly
Ing."
"She might," conceded Eddy.
"But she lias a family, eh?"
"Not to Interfere," Dagger said
hastily. "And I'd love to do exhi
bition flying."
steilnian surveyed her fur some
moments without answering.
"You'd have to do exactly what
you fcere told," he warned.
"I would."
"And If 1 wasn't satisfied with
you. I'd drop the whole business."
"Hut you won't have to, Mr.
Stedman."
"Won't 1?" He exchanged grinB
with Vaneerlng. "I expect not, but
jlill When can you begin?"
"Might now," she said.
"Hold on," he exclaimed, "All
my buses are in the air, and I've
got them filled for the rest ot the
morning. Come tomorrow about
this time, and we'll see what we
can do. Or better sny six o'clock.
I'm sorry to seem ungallant. Miss
Marley: but this must be a case of

Illume it on the war!"
"I won't blame It on anybody,"
she retorted gayly. "Thanka aw

"Walt and see how you fool five

Dngger felt perfectly comforta

Never In her life was she to for
got that first breathless swoop to
ward the blue. A nioinontury sen
sation of suffocation as the wind
blew over the cowl ot the cockpit.
Then a feeling of buoyancy beyond
description. The Held dwindled be-
nenth them, a tiny patch ot green,
and for miles the country Btrctched
away, checker-boarded or dotted
with buildings whore El Puso
sprawled its pattern of streets.
She wanted to cry out to Sted

herself hoard above tho thunder of
the motor, bo she choked her ex
citement as best she could, until
he motioned her to tnke the double
controls by her Boat, grinning bis
acknowledgment of her emotion.
Her first instinct was to grab al
the wheel, in the nick of time,
however, remembering that porky
handling was dangerous with
elthor horse or motor car. Her
hands wavered, checked and final
ly dropped feather-light. Sted
nian's npproving smile was her re
ward, and for some Ave minutes he
lot hor meet tho problems of flight.
"How was It?" Vnuoerlng shout
ed as thoy landed. '
"Marvelous." answered Dagger.
And Stedman, with one leg over
the side of the cockpit, exclaimed:
"She's got It In hor, Van. By
Qoorgo, she's a born pilot."
Vaneerlng caught hor hand.
"I know It," he cried. "Good
work, Dagger. We'll start our own
flying circus, eh?"
And he Bwung her down with a
casual ease that was much moro
exciting to hor than the flight had
been, and waltzed her over the
turf, to the delight of the median
lcs. She was terribly happy, joy
ously disturbed. There was Borne
thing very magnetic and compel
ling about him. He stirred her It
emulutlon yet she was not nnx
lous to Btirpass him. A sensation
which both pleased and frightoned
her.
Naturally, In the circumstances.
she saw a great deal of him.

Aunty. lie's nice, and that's all
that matters. Hesldos, he's Just a
friend, so what do I care about his
having money?"
Dagger honestly thought - she
meant that statement
Vancorlng, however, took theli
association seriously from the be
ginning. He couldn't see enough
ot her. He was with her every
evening sho would give him, and
afternoons as well, when he could
dodge duty. He nmdo no attenipl
to hldo his Infatuation, one day
when he said to her:
"I'm crazy about you, Dagger.
God, you're the finest girl I ever
know."
"Oh, you Just think so, Jack.
You mustn't be silly."
"It this is silliness, I want to be
crazy."
