Second 'Peking Man' Skull
Most Complete Discovery
. Yet Made, Lived Million
Years Ago and Had Big
Brain, Is Deduction.
Scenic Spot Declared Most;
Beautiful By Assistant
Secretary of Labor. Roh
rer C. White.
PEIPING. China, July 31. (ff)
Discovery of a second sinaiuhrou
hih skull was announced fy Dr.
Davidson Ulack or the Rockefeller
foundation at a meeting of the Chi
nese Geological survey today.
.The new specimen, which was
pieced together from uncrushed
fragments, was stuted to have
yielded vuluaule information con
cerning certain parts not represent
ed in the first skull found last
December.
Dr. Black said he believed the
second skull was that of a young
adult male whereas the previous
find was probably that of a girl.
Reports last December of the
discovery of a new. "Peking man"
skull by a Chinese geologist work
ing in the quarries near Pelping
aroused much interest in scientific
circles. At the time it was found
it was described as the most com
plete discovery of its kind in hls
tory. Brain Case Intact
The entire brain case was intact,
which Is not the case in the Pill
down and near-dawn discoveries.
Dr. Ulack, formerly of Toronto,
describing the diseovery of this
first skull, recounted the excava
tions since 1921 when the first
I tooth was found of sinanthropus
Pekinensls by Dr. J. G. Anderson,
British scientist.
Dr. Black also called attention to
the vault of the skull form and the
massive brow ridges. This skull
was estimted to be more than J,
000,000 years old and to have
shown a comparatively large brain
capacity.
GARRISON, N. Y., July 31. (P)
News of the second Peking man
skull was welcomed today by Dr.
Henry Fairfield Osborn, president
of the American Museum of Nat
rul History, as a.n outstanding dis
covery In the history of primitive
man.
Those Chinese skulls rank with
two others.ns the oldest relics of
I he human race. 6ne of-the others
ts the famous pithecanthropus
nectus, the Java man, the first of
llie.trlo discovered. Pithecanthro
pus raised a storm of dispute, but
now is regarded by many scientists
us valid, and as probably around
half a million years old. The other
discovery was made a few years
ago In England and is reckoned at
upwards of a million years an
tiquity. Type Established
"This means," said Dr. Osborn,
commenting on the new discovery
1 in China, "that the Chinese finds
firmly establish the type of a dis
tinct species of man, but anato
mists are not yet convinced that
the Chinese skulls belong to a dis
tinct genus."
(Genus is a wide classification
horses and zebras, for example, be
ing different species of the same
genus).
"Many anatomists think that bI
nanthropus belongs to the same
division as neanderthal man, name
ly palenathropus.
"These newly found,, uncrushed
fragments will doubtless bear new
evidence on this disputed point,
which we shall hear of when the
fractured parts can be fitted to
gether and the reconstruction be
studied.
"The two finds make this an out
standing discovery in the history of
primitive man."
"Industries are sound, and tend
toward a ei-nilual Improvement in
the unemployment situation thru-'
out the United Stales 1 have ob
served In our survey." Hoher C.
White, ussistant secretary of labor
stated last evening before lenving
on the Shasta for San Francisco to
continue the survey now being
made by federal officials.
Air. White is muking one of his

ed Slates, uccompanied by Thomas

sioner of naturalization of Wash
ington, D. c, and S. p. WUon,
chief supervisor of Immigration,
also of Washington.. Surveys of
field services are mado by the,
three men every two years. Includ
ing immigration districts, natural
ization districts, employment and
conciliation services.
Mr. White, however, wns more
enthusiastic about his visit in
southern Oregon and Crater Lnko
than about labor problems and un
employment. Urged to See Iiako
When they had completed their
work in Portland, K. P. Bonham,
district director of United States
immigration In that city told the
officials that they must see Crater
Luke before leaving Oregon.
The party from Washington, ac
companied by Mr. Uonhum arrived
by motor In Medford Tuesday eve
ning, nnd spent Wednesday at the
lake.
"It is the most beautiful sight I
have over seen," Mr. White stated,
"and there are few national parks
that I have not visited." Besides
the blue of the lake, Mr. White was
Impressed by beauty of the high
way, lined with trees.
Mr. White remarked that he
realized Crater Lake was becoming
one of the most popular of the na
tional parks, as the number going
to the lake increases in great
numbers annually, while atten
dance at most of the other parks
is falling off slightly.

CHILDREN
CHILDREN will tret, often for no
apparent reason. But there's al
ways Caslonal Harmless as the recipe
on the wrapper: mild and bland as it
tastes. But its gentle action soothes
a youngster more surely than a more
powerlul medicine.
That's the beauty of this special
children's remedyl It may be given
the tiniest infant as often as there
is need. In cases of colic, diarrhea or
similar disturbance, it is invaluable.
A coated tongue calls for just a few
drops to ward off constipation; so
does any suggestion of bad breath.
Whenever children don't eat well,
don't rest well, or have any little
upset this pure vegetable prepara
tion is usually all that's needed..
